Rotary Definition

Rotary is an organization of business and professional persons united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations and help build good will and peace in the world.

Our Mission

"Doing good in the World is more than a motto.  It is our goal, our mission, and our reminder.  It expresses in the clearest terms why we have a Foundation, and it challenges us to reach as far as we can to do the most good possible with everything we have.  Our Foundation exisits to support the good that we can do through Rotary.  It expands our reach, increases our strength, and makes our service more powerful and more effective.  Because of our Foundation we can, very simple, do more of our Rotary work."

2004-2005

PROGRAMS REPORTS MISSED:

12/27/11 Josh Case, Eagle Scout Project

Josh Case is the newest Eagle Scout in Highland due to his Silver Lake Ramp project.  He loves to spend time at Silver Lake and wanted everyone eles to be able to enjoy the park fully as well.  So he was inspiried to build a handicap accessible ramp for fishing.  The entire project cost $6000 and included 500 man hours.  He has been working diligently to complete this project for over year as he attempted to raise funds and build partnerships with organizations like Rotary.  He contacted over 50 businesses.  Josh was able to partner with the city and use their dock, but added a path and parking space next to the floating docks.  Our own Mark Frey helped donated a lot of his time and resources to assist Josh with this project.  Kevin DeWaele continues to be involved with the scouts as a scout leader.  Rotary contributed $1000 for this project.

1/3/11 Justin Jefferson - Farming Africa

Justin is from Pocahontas, IL and began his love of farming there.  He desired to take these skills to  Rwanda, African and teach them new farming techniques so that they would have better access to nutrition.  He started a non-profit organization to accomplish this mission.  He currently ownes 2500 acres farms.  The workers are paid $1.50/day which is above average in Rwanda.

1/10/12 - Mark Latham & Steve Ferguson - HCS Update

Mark shared that there have been more challenges in implementing the fiber services then they had expected.  He stated that the fiber arrived 6 months after they ordered it due to the earthquake in Japan.  They had signed a contracted with Echostar (Dish) to provide the video features and then they pulled out of all contracts.  They worked to secure Avail as the new video service provider.  They had ordered DVR boxes through a company and then the company cut this aspect of development before developing the software.  The city secured Manerva as the new DVR provider.  All this was stated to thank everyone for their patience as they rolled out services to Highland.  Mark stated that their goal was to be in all neighborhoods in the corporate city area by the end of the year.

Steve shared that they now have their redundant line open so that blackouts in service would not occur.  They used AT&T lines through Troy and onto Collinsville.  This is provided to businesses at no additional cost.

Steve distributed information on their different packages, including channels and costs.  They currently have 3 video packages (and 2 add-ons packages) ranging from $26.99 to $73.99/month with over 300 channels available to choose from.  A free DVR box is provided to the resident; competitors currently charge $6-7/month for a box.  System is set up to record up to 4 channels at one time.  Freeze Live TV is also included, giving the resident the ability to pause and rewind the current show being viewed.  If additional boxes are desired there is a $6.95 charge as a box is needed for every TV to receive the same services.

HCS uses the coax or ethernet wires currently installed in your house to run their services.  There are bundle packages available for phone and internet as well.

They are hosting an open house the 2nd Tuesday from 4-7pm over the next 3 months.  They will distribute a raffle ticket for attendance and give away a 47" TV each month.

For more information contact HCS 654-1519.

PROGRAM: Tour of the new St. Joseph's Hospital, Wayne Steiner

St. Joseph's Hospital: Building for Tomorrow

The design for the replacement hospital is created around creating a more accessible and positive environment for patience.  Many of the concepts were derived from the St. Franscin theories of healing and wellness.  They built in a lot of "luxuries" and "comforts" in order to create a more home-like environment that encourages faster healing and wholistic support.  Some of these items include, Wi-Fi access to every room, SKYPE access, cable TV, window views, private rooms,  meditation spaces, Wi-Fi cafe with 24 hour food available, larger gift shop, and community partners located on Main Street.  This hospital will become a destination for all medical needs.

The upgrades will also assist the medical staff to be able to better perform their jobs by having digital access to a patients entire medical record and having treatment supplies available in each room.  The flow of the hospital also lends itself to more efficient services as each are of service have been put together into departments.

The location of the new hospital will be on the 62 acres across from the High School at the intersection of Troxler and Highway 160.  The design allows for easy access to various entries through multiple and segregated drives.  There will be much needed increase in parking space as well.

Further details and visuals of each aspect of the new hospital are available for viewing.

The hospital is in the final stages of approval as they have their Certificate of Need hearing coming up shortly.  Wayne stated that never in the state of Illinois has there been a denial for a replacement hospital adding no additional services.

Wayne chairs the hospital friends board and really feels that he is taking part in something that is going to benefit future generations, further economic development, and be something that Highland can truly be proud to call their own.
