Rotary Definition

Rotary is an organization of business and professional persons united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations and help build good will and peace in the world.

Our Mission

"Doing good in the World is more than a motto.  It is our goal, our mission, and our reminder.  It expresses in the clearest terms why we have a Foundation, and it challenges us to reach as far as we can to do the most good possible with everything we have.  Our Foundation exisits to support the good that we can do through Rotary.  It expands our reach, increases our strength, and makes our service more powerful and more effective.  Because of our Foundation we can, very simple, do more of our Rotary work."

 ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • Thanks to Jennifer for putting on a very cozy Christmas party lask week.  The food was delicious and the conversations entertaining!  Also, THANK YOU Jennifer for leading the Adopt-a-family project this year.  Thanks to Biddie, Katrina, Maura, and Carrie for assisting with the shopping.
  • Our club donated a $1,000 towards the well in Ghana through Father Paul.  Len Daiber contacted me yesterday to let me know that the well diggers are going to start that project this weekend.  If they hadn't started, it would have been another 18 months before those contractors were back in the area.
  • Angie stated that there is still some citrus available for sale.  At the end of this week, the remaining citrus will go to HACSM.
  • DO NOT FORGET THAT IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN HOSTING AN EXCHANGE STUDENT IN 2012-2013 TO CONTACT BILL BY THE END OF THIS YEAR!!  If he has no volunteers we will pull out of the program.
  • Holli has fantastic Rotary shirts and jackets available for sale to help promote Rotary to the community.  See her for details.
  • There is Knights of Columbus New Year's Even Dance.  It will from 8:30 - 12:30 and the band "The Last Resort" will be playing.  Price of $20 per person includes draft beer and fountain soda.
  • Maura gave Brittany & Hunter a Christmas gift for taking such good care of the club on Tuesdays.

PROGRAM: Tim Twyford, Upward Sports

Tim first thanked the club for past support, such as donating to purchase a new scoreboard.

Tim describes upward simply as "sports for the right reasons."  He shared part of his personal testimony that he had a body cast for sometime in his life because of his hips.  He was not the best athlete at all but loved to play.  He said that Dan Grandame was his coach and told him that if he showed up to practice every week that he would play every week.  Tim shared how much that meant to him to be part of the team and to be able to participate.  It was not all about winning the game, like it so often is today.  Upward creates an environment like this, where all kids are placed on equally talented teams, matched against players of the same caliber, and have equal playing time.  The refs and the coaches both take time to teach the kids during the games so they have opportunities to improve.  They do teach them hard work and skills but most importantly it is about character development and faith.  Every practice they take time to do a devotional together and have memory verses.  Volunteers give devotionals or testimonies at half times of games.

Every year there has been more than 200 students participating in upward with over 700+ volunteers to make it run.  Upward is truly a Highland Community Sports Program as 14 different churches come together to put the program on. The current program about to start is Basketball and Cheerleading.  Each kid pays $70 to particpate in the program (scholarships available if needed).  This covers uniform, DVD, book, award stars, 8 weeks of practices, and a program at the end of the season with a national talent.

Over the last few years they have used the gyms at Highland Community Church, St. Paul, and Highland Hope.  This year, due to the new childcare/pre-school housed in the Community Church, they have lost their practice/game space.  The primary school is available but they have to raise $2000.  They play 14-17 games every Saturday January through March.  They really need people to give time and money to help cover this cost and the needs of the program.  Tim stated that if you are interested in the program to contact him even if you do not have any coaching experience.  He stated that some of his best coaches are moms who have never played basketball because Upward does such a good job preparing the coaches.

He offered to make our partnership a 2-way-street by having a Rotary Day and spreading the news about Rotary to the kids and parents.

In closing, one of Tim's favorite stories that truly hooked him on this program is the story of a kid named Zack.  During one of the games late in the season, Tim was going over some XO's with his assistant coach when all of the sudden his players on the floor and on the bench went nuts.  He had no idea what was going on.  They were a good team and had lead most of the games and so he was not sure what was the big deal about that basket...until one of his players screamed Zack scored.  He responded by saying, that's good but what's the big deal.  The player responded, "coach Zack hasn't scored all season."  He was not aware of this but all the players knew and were working to make sure he scored.
