| Rotary Definition | |
Rotary is an organization of business and professional persons united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations and help build good will and peace in the world. |
| Our Mission | |
"Doing good in the World is more than a motto. It is our goal, our mission, and our reminder. It expresses in the clearest terms why we have a Foundation, and it challenges us to reach as far as we can to do the most good possible with everything we have. Our Foundation exisits to support the good that we can do through Rotary. It expands our reach, increases our strength, and makes our service more powerful and more effective. Because of our Foundation we can, very simple, do more of our Rotary work."

PROGRAM: Hugh & Paulette, Marion Medical Mission | | |
Hugh & Paulette recently returned from a 6 week trip to Africa where they and other teams put in 2500 wells to help supply clean water and protect residents from disease.
Marion Medical Missons was originally founded by Tom Logan in 1985 to be a Christian, front-line, hand-on, volunteer, nonprofit organization. Orginally, their travels to Africa (central and northern Malawi, southern Tanzania, and eastern Zambia) were to supply medical services. He soon discovered that many of their medical problems could be fixed if they had clean water. The Shallow Well Program was created to help share the love of Christ while providing a sustainable source of safe drinking water.
Volunteers who go to assist in the SWP pay for their own expense ($1000 airfare and $600 expenses in Africa). They work directly with the locals who will benefit from the well (as many as 150-200 people can be served by a well). Each well cost $400 to purchase the cement, pipe, and pump. The locals do the manual work to dig out the well using shovels, buckets and ropes. They also make the bricks out of clay.
At the dedications of the well they are reminded that the wells are a gift and that they are to be a good steward of the well and are entrusted to maintain it. They pay an annual $10 fee for maintenence program to help with replacement parts. They are also to keep the area clean and keep the animals away from the well. There is a local person trained to perform maintence on the wells and travels from village to village to check on them. If they pay their fee than MMM can get replacement parts much cheaper than the village could.
Hugh shared that the government does have wells there but that they are not maintained well. MMM has begun to go back and check older wells to verify that they are in good working order. Most recently a well from 1999 was checked and is still providing safe water. Since the beginning they have put in over 16,000 wells. They are working on a GPS tracking program to help them monitor their wells long term.
For more information or to get involved go to marionmedical.org.
Maura reminded the club that we recently purchased 6 wells for this project and were very glad to help support it. |
