Rotary Definition

Rotary is an organization of business and professional persons united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations and help build good will and peace in the world.

Our Mission

"Doing good in the World is more than a motto.  It is our goal, our mission, and our reminder.  It expresses in the clearest terms why we have a Foundation, and it challenges us to reach as far as we can to do the most good possible with everything we have.  Our Foundation exisits to support the good that we can do through Rotary.  It expands our reach, increases our strength, and makes our service more powerful and more effective.  Because of our Foundation we can, very simple, do more of our Rotary work."

PROGRAM: Dr. Patricia Wolf, Medica Mamba

Adrian Rogier stated that he feels that the best way to define what Rotary is by the "Rotary Foundation."  He stated that the foundation brings men and women together and put hands and feet to their dollars.

The mission statement of the Rotary Foundation is to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty.

The Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation supported solely by voluntary contributions from Rotarians and friends of the Foundation who share its vision of a better world.

There are many program available through R.F. including Polio Plus; Health, Hunger, and Humantarian; District Simplified Grants; Ambassadory Scholarships; Group Study Exchange Program; etc.

R.F. has had its sight set on the eradication of polio world wide.  Over 900 million dollars has been given to accomplish this mission, in 2009-2010 alone there was 18.1 million.  Bill Gates, one of the wealthiest in our nation (affectionately called a "fat cat" by Adrian) challenged Rotary to raise 200 million for polio vaccinations in two years.  If Rotarians accomplished this, he pledge 200 million dollars as well.  Soon the news will be released to unveil if Rotary completed this challenge.

For more information on this challenge, polio plus, and the foundation please view these links below.

Another aspect of the Foundation is the Paul Harris Fellowship.  Paul Harris founded Rotary in 1957 and led the way in this humanitarian, global effort.  Individuals who contribute $1000 to Rotary International can be designated or can designate a Paul Harris Fellow.  For those who give over that amount, they qualify to receive additional pins for each $1000 donation contributed.

Tuesday, Adrian was able to honor both of these types of donors.

Angela Fears was awarded a Paul Harris Fellow for her participation in the 2008 Giving Circle (group of 10 individuals who give $100/year to the foundation).

Adrian had received a sapphire pin to award to Carol Henrichs for her donation to R.I.  Carol was awarded a PHF by our club a few months ago for her outstanding, unselfish service to Highland.  She was honored by the gift and was glad to learn more about Rotary and wanted to take part in making a global difference through R.I.

Over the years the Rotary Club of Highland has designated almost 120 PHF, which is an outstanding feat!  We have much to be thankful for!
