Rotary Definition

Rotary is an organization of business and professional persons united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations and help build good will and peace in the world.

Our Mission

"Doing good in the World is more than a motto.  It is our goal, our mission, and our reminder.  It expresses in the clearest terms why we have a Foundation, and it challenges us to reach as far as we can to do the most good possible with everything we have.  Our Foundation exisits to support the good that we can do through Rotary.  It expands our reach, increases our strength, and makes our service more powerful and more effective.  Because of our Foundation we can, very simple, do more of our Rotary work."

Thier goal is to empower the athletes by usin sport specific physicals follow standards established by the American College of Sports Medicine. They have Personal Athletic Training Challenge (PATCH) camps use standardized testing equipment to assess your strengths and weaknesses, to focus athletes on their workouts. They make sure that parents, trainers, coaches, athletic directors and family physicians are up-to-date and working in-sync for the athlete's well-being. Athletic conditioning, physical therapy and orthopedic care are all available close to home for easy access. And a basic injury training course for coaches is available through Athletes Advantage.

In expansion of thier services the local AA groups sponsor an Athletic Trainer to work full time serving the local high school.  Erin Hoepfner is Highland High School's trainer.  One of the most common and concerning issues that they face is concussions.  They gave a power point presentation to explain the statistics, factors, signs, evalutaion tools, and return to play guidelines.

OCTOBER 18TH - PROGRAM: Chief Terry Bell, Community Update

Chief Bell and Henry

CHIEF BELL & HENRY (WHO HAS SOME BIKER GANG STORIES IF YOU WANT TO HEAR THEM)

Terry stated that they have a 911 operating center that includes Police, Fire, and EMS.  They have a 24/7 Full time Paramedic Service that covers over 200 square miles.  The Fire Department is a volunteer department.  The police department currently staffs 18 officers and 25 total staff.  The average age of an officer is currently under 30.  He sees that the benefit of this is reliability to the people they are serving.  He states that there is a lack of experience and they make up for that with educating them on where to focus their efforts.

Chief stated that overall he has good news to report.  Highland is a safe community with the crime rates down across the board.  He stated that Part 1 crimes (more serious crimes of burglary and robberies are down 20%.  Their solvability is up 20% with 65% of cases being solved.  He stated that their biggest concern is drugs.  Heroin has become one of the top drugs used and is responsible for taking of a few lives in the metro area.  He stated that the current heroine being used on the street is more addictive, cheap, and more concentrated (85%).  They ran a few large busts earlier this year with a lot of warrants.  They traced many of Highland's drugs back to North St. Louis and then back to Afghanistan.  Many of the sellers were not local residents and just moved in to take advantage of Highland youth.  They are moving out now and feeling very unwelcome here.  The city's Part 2 Crimes are up slightly by 5%.  These are DUIs and disorderly conducts.  He credits this to the officers being more proactive and pulling people over more.  He said Part 2 crimes have a 95% solvability.

Upcoming Projects that they are working are on are

  1. Possibilities to have 8-10 Cameras around the square and major intersections in order to create "force multiplier," meaning to have more eyes on a scene incase an incident should arise.  These cameras would be used in a security function but instead would be useful to call up if an accident occurred, an alarm was sound off, or a disorderly incident occurred.  This will allow them better to evaluate how to handle a situation or investigate the incident.
  2. Later down the road he would like to expand the use of these cameras for local businesses like banks to allow them to respond best when they are needed.
  3. The are going to begin a needs assessment for a new facility for all three public service agencies.  They have purchased 10 acres from the Hospital.  This will allow them better access to three major highways in Highland and decrease response time.  They are going to diligent about this process and do not have plans to  move for another 3-5 years.  They are very limited in their space and functionality.  They also want to have a large Community Room in the new facility for the public to use.
