Rotary Definition

Rotary is an organization of business and professional persons united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations and help build good will and peace in the world.

Our Mission

"Doing good in the World is more than a motto.  It is our goal, our mission, and our reminder.  It expresses in the clearest terms why we have a Foundation, and it challenges us to reach as far as we can to do the most good possible with everything we have.  Our Foundation exisits to support the good that we can do through Rotary.  It expands our reach, increases our strength, and makes our service more powerful and more effective.  Because of our Foundation we can, very simple, do more of our Rotary work."

2004-2005

NEW MEMBERSHIP: Welcome Brad Rench

Brad Rench joined the Highland Club in Rotary after the First Clover Leaf Bank opened up their loan production office in the Wal-mart area Plaza.  He has been in the banking industry for 29 years.  The bank owns property next to Basler and has plans to build there someday as the business and services to Highland grows.  Currently they have 4 locations and are 580 million in size.

Brad has been married for 26 years and has one son who is gainfully employed and has his masters from Washington University.  He owns a house in Highland near Diamond Mineral Springs and is glad to be back in this community.  He is no stranger to Rotary as this is his fourth Rotary Club to be a member of.

MEMBERSHIP, James Kemper

PROGRAM: Roland Harris, 'The Old Rotary"

Rolands shared that he has been apart of Rotary for 61 years and has loved every minute of it.  He shared that the president at that time (49-50), Mnsr. William Wayland, called him on the phone and said that they were looking for new members and that he had put his name in for membership and that he needed to come to the next meeting.  He stated that he came even though he thought he was too busy to be a Rotarian due to his new business.  At that time the club was 12 years old and they were meeting on Tuesdays at noon at St.Paul cafeteria.  When the school opened they moved it to the evenings and this worked until they started to have basketball games in the gym overhead and then no longer could hear the programs.  They moved to Micheals in 1979.

The club's charter date is November 23, 1937 and was sponsored by the Edwardsville Club.  There were 21 members at that first meeting at the Columbia Hotel (which is now Eagle Inn across from Post Office).  The first president was Freemount Coonan who owned Coonan Hardware Store.  Mose Campbell was the first Vice President with Cyril Spangel being the Secretary and Rock Steiner being the Treasurer.

Three of his foundest and most memorable Rotary activities was the Donkey Basketball game of 1943, the 1953 plays that Rotarians participated in, and the 50th Rotary Anniversary of 1955.

He stated that he wants to keep Rotary going and alive in well in Highland and believes in order to do that club needs to be diligent to recruit the next generation as it is stated right now that only 11% of members are under 50, 68% over 50 and 39%  over 60.
