Rotary Definition

Rotary is an organization of business and professional persons united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations and help build good will and peace in the world.

Our Mission

"Doing Godd in the World in more than a motto.  It is our goal, our mission, and our reminder.  It expresses in the clearest terms why we have a Foundation, and it challenges us to reach as far as we can to do the most good possible with everything we have.  Our Foundation exisits to support the good that we can do through Rotary.  It expands our reach, increases our strength, and makes our service more powerful and more effective.  Because of our Foundation we can, very simple, do more of our Rotary work."

PROGRAM: Gordon Jumper, District Governor

DG Gordon Jumper

Go to the District Website to see Gordon's Bio

                      http://www.rotarydistrict6460.org

Gordon shared that as the District Governor he wanted to come to share about the opportunties Rotary provides rather than obligation Rotary creates.  Gordon expressed great appreciation for the Highland Club has done for its local community.  Gordon shared that he was able to take a tour of the library with Angela and see the beautiful Children's library and the photos of the Rotarians pulling carpet.  He stated that this project is an example of the fundamental substance of Rotary by changing the world one community at a time.  There are 34,000 clubs that meet weekly that are trying to accomplish this.

The new theme for 2011-2012 is 'Reach within to embrace humanity."

Gordon asked the club to answer the questions; "Are you doing all the things that you should be doing in your community? If not, what should you be doing and what is keeping you from doing it?"

Gordon stated that often times that answer is "no, because there are not enough members to accomplish all the tasks needed."  Gordon stated that everything begins with membership and in order for clubs to be most effective they need to work on building and retaining members by presenting the many opportunities Rotary offers.

Gordon asked "how many people enjoy Rotary (uniamous yes)", then asked "how many know a friend that is not a Rotarian (another uniamous "yes"), and then asked how many people have brought in a new member in the last year or so (only about 5)."  He stated that the difference is the ASK; often times people don't ask because they feel that it is an imposition to their friends and forget that it is an activity that they love an enjoy.  When Bill Gates was asked whey he was not a Rotarian, his response was "I was never asked."  He stated that the goal for the district is for every club to Net 1 member which equals a 2% growth instead of the current decline in every club.

Gordon shared that there is a New Generations initiative to teach the next generation to value service about self by building the Roteract Programs (ages 18-35).

Gordon stated the the District is here to help the clubs "show and tell" what Rotary is doing in the community and their world.  District has a new PR plan and welcomes reports of local club activity.

He asked the club members mark their calendars for October 14-16 for the District Assembly, especially October 15th.  He stated that they changed the format of the assembly and that Saturday will be the bulk of the information in a one day conference style to allow more people to attend with their schedules.

Stated that one part of this year's theme was "embrace humanity."  He wanted to congratulate the club for being part of "End Polio Now."  He stated that "you are going to end polio."  He stated that the vaccine cost only 10cents to save a life and if we do end polio in the next year that 10 million children's lives would be saved over the course of the next 20 years.  He stated that out of the 2mil challenge that 176millions has been raised so far and we need to push over the next year to complete this challenge.  Gordon stated that this can be accomplished if every club gives $2000 in the next year.

He encouraged Rotarians to consider being part of "Every Rotarian, Every Year" and giving $2 a week to help RI leverage the resources have greater impact.

He ended the presentation with stating that Rotary is a great avenue to pursue your passions (wells, santitation, constructing medical facilities, send buses/fire trucks, spend time learning about culture, etc.).  Whatever it is "Rotary has an opp for that."
