 ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • Rotary Scholarship Recipient, Leah Duncan, sent in a thank you note for being chosen and looks forward to starting school in the fall at SLU.
  • Wayne brought a Yearbook and letter from Chriton Elementary in West Virgina (literacy project funded in 2008-2009).  The letter once again thanked Rotary for their support and updated on the current use of materials and funds given; games and toys are used for incentives for the Excellarated Readers Progam, risers are in constant use, library books are constantly used, and she is wisely using the remainder of the funds to support literacy projects.  Principal called her school "The Jewel on the Mountain"  and feels that despite the challenges that they face (poverty) that they are moving the right direction.

SPECIAL PRESENTATION

Mike Sutton

Terry presented a check of $500 to Mike Sutton on behalf of the Highland School District Foundation.

Mike shared that the Business Education Alliance collaborates with the HCSD to produce a high quality educational system that is responsive to the needs of the community by allowing an open and free exchange of information, the sharing of resources, and conducting cooperative programs.  BEA relies solely on donations and provides avenues to enhance their current education (through tech grants), prepare and build character for students, equip parents, and provide hands on opportunites for career interests.

Programs include:

  • VIP (Very Important Principles) - Character Education Program
  • Focus STL Program (allowing students to meeting with students from other districts to build character and be introduced to diversity)
  • Parenting Plus Seminars (improving parenting skills)
  • Reality Store (Students choose a career, receives monthly paycheck, and experiences the financial obligations that adults deal with daily)
  • Vocational/Technology Programs: Including Construction Trades where student build a house (last year 100 students participated in this project through a grant program and built a Green House in the Pineview Area that is currently for sale).

BEA meets every other month at the HSD building @ 1145am.  Contact the district for more information.

PROGRAM: Margie Duncan, Project Lead the Way

Margie Duncan

Margie is a co-lead for the Project Lead the Way Program with Chris Duncan (Chris was at training and unable to make it to the meeting).  Margie is orginally from Pierron and has lived in Highland for many years and taught mathimatics for 25 years in the HSD.

Project Lead the Way is a pre-engineering program preparing students to tackle careers in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathimatics) arena.  It was created by a business man who was disheartened that when looking for engineers he had to go out of the country to find them.  They wanted to do something about this and sold off a third of the company to develop PLTW and its cirriculum for schools.

PLTW has been in Highland High School for 3 years going into its fourth year.  Every teacher in the program has to go through rigirous training before being allowed to teach the course.  Margie originally signed up to be an advisor for the program but when the demand from the students increased she got on board and now teaches the "Introduction to Engineering Design."  This course covers the study of the design process and learning modeling software.  Margie has to challenge them to think outside the box and behind every invention and innovation in order to get to a final product.

The other courses offered are "Principles of Engineering" (works with Fisher-technics, exploring technology systems and engineering processes), "Civil Engineering & Architecture" (students collaborate on the development of community-based projects - class chosen due to the large construction base in our area), and new this year will be "Engineering Design & Development" (mentor one-on-one program to help research, design, and construct solutions to engineering problems).

Currently the program has 120 students enrolled which is 10-15% of the overall school population.  Outcomes have shown that 60-70% of students who have graduated from this program have gone on to a STEM career.

You can help prepare our students to lead the way for American by:

  • Recruiting students to be apart of this program
  • Being apart of the Community Partnership Team
  • Being a mentor and offering students to come to your business

Margie appreciates that this is a hands on program that really equips students for future careers.  *Just a note as a reminder that Chris partnered with us for the Fish Race to raise funds for the Tech Club as the equipment is expensive and funds are mostly raised on their own.
