GOLF TOURNAMENT, Mark Korte

The Golf Tournament is on June 17th at the Highland Country Club.  Lunch is at 11:30 and tee-off is at 12.  This is our annual fundraiser specifically to benefit D.A.R.E. Program, Meals on Wheels, St. Joseph's Hospital Friend's Van, and St. Paul Grade School (alternates with Highland Elementary).  Many of these programs do not receive much money eleswhere and rely on our annual donation to function.  Please consider the enourmous impact these programs have on our community and GET INSPIRED to help Mark build momentum and get the remaining Tee-signs and teams together.

Mark stated that currently we have 52 Tee-signs sponsored and 16 1/2 Teams registered.  It was a great week and he is thankful for everyone helping to get thier Tee-signs in!

He now needs 5-6 Rotarians to work from 12-4 the day of the tournament; please check your calendar and let him know if you are available.

Mark thanked Bob Nagel for sponsoring a Rotary sign with information about the club and membership.

PROGRAM: Mandy Ringwald, Relay for Life & Mandy the American Cancer Society Staff Representative

 American Cancer Society: www.cancer.org

The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service.

Together with our millions of supporters, the American Cancer Society (ACS) saves lives and creates a world with less cancer and more birthdays by helping people stay well, helping people get well, by finding cures, and by fighting back.

Headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, the ACS has 12 chartered Divisions, more than 900 local offices nationwide, and a presence in more than 5,100 communities.

Many shared some of the services offered are:

  • Reach to Recovery: Past cancer patient matched to a new diagnosed patient in order to mentor and guide
  • Road to Recovery: Assists patients with rides to treatments
  • Look Good, Feel Better (i.e.,Wig Closet)
  • Hope Lodge

Mandy Ringwald shared that the Goal of the Highland Relay is to raise support for the ACS so they can continue to provide the services they do as well as have an avenue for survivors and loved ones to be remembered.  The relay allows people to physically put themselves in a place where they struggle on by walking for 24hours.

The 2010 Highland Relay is on July 8 & 9 at GLIK PARK (change of venue).  The survivor dinner will be at the Korte Rec Center and the Relay will take place out front of the Center by Hunsche Lake.  This will make for a beautiful luminary ceramony.  The goal of the Highland Relay this year is to have 30 teams with 200 participants.  To dates they are on track to surpass this goal having 22 teams with close to 300 participants (changed the team limits this year as well).  There is still time for YOU to get involved as a team supporter, team participants, sponsor, by purchasing a luminary, and BY ATTENDING THE EVENT.  Mandy shared that along with a new venue that there will be new activities throughout the night to everyone engaged.

WHY is it important for you to participate: Simple Diagnosis of Cancer continue to INCREASE and the HOPE FOR A CURE is as good as the research to make it happen
