ANNOUNCEMENTS | |
- At the board meeting last week it was decided that a letter with a pledge of $1000 would be sent to Rotary Club of Joplin to be used for Tornado Disaster Relief.
- Last week there was also a local tradegy as the Highland Fire Department fought an extreme house fire and a 6 year old boy lost his life and siblings were also injured. The family lost everything and are currently being housed in a Terra Properties Rental. Terra properties has a donation drop off for house hold items - GREAT NEWS - They have received overwhelming amount of donations and asked if everyone could wait to bring any thing eles until they see what the insurance is going to cover. Continue to keep them in your prayers, though, as they grieve over their loss and heal from this tragedy.

SPECIAL PRESENTATION, Darrin Twyford & Brian McClenahan, Highland Police Dept.
Darrin shared that he and Brain were taking some further education courses working towards their masters and had an assignement to do a fundraiser. They heard of the FiSH RaCe and asked to borrow the fish to host their own race benefiting the "Violence Prevention Center" in Belleville.
In 5 weeks they raised $5000 getting individuals to "sponsor 1000 racers" and selling a few concessions. They had no cost as the local pool was used, prizes were donated, and fish were borrowed. Darrin presented a check to rotary for $100 in appreciation of the support and assistance to make this race go and offered any of his resources to make our race even better next year.

| GOLF TOURNAMENT, Mark Korte | | |
The Golf Tournament is on June 17th at the Highland Country Club. Lunch is at 11:30 and tee-off is at 12. This is our annual fundraiser specifically to benefit D.A.R.E. Program, Meals on Wheels, St. Joseph's Hospital Friend's Van, and St. Paul Grade School (alternates with Highland Elementary). Many of these programs do not receive much money eleswhere and rely on our annual donation to function. Please consider the enourmous impact these programs have on our community and GET INSPIRED to help Mark build momentum and get the remaining Tee-signs and teams together.
Mark stated that currently we have 25 Tee-signs sponsored and 12 Teams registered. This is the 50 yard line - in order to make a profit to be able to donate approximately the same amount to each organization we need to have 45-50 Tee-signs and 18-20 teams!
Mark will also need 5-6 Rotarians to work from 12-4 the day of the tournament; please check your calendar and let him know if you are available.

PROGRAM: Angela Kim, Library Funding Update

Angela and her husband Dr. Kim; very glad to be carrying OUT the orange carpet!

Angela THANKED the Rotarians for their gift of $10,000 to help remodel the Children's Library. Rotarians also volunteered their efforts to help move shelves and tear out the old carpet.

Angela shared a little of the history of the library and everything they have done to preserve its structure, update, and maintain its value to the community.
- Library was built in 1929 and the Children's Library addition was built in 1983. Currently 9 member board (openings available). Library recently merged with IL Heartland Library System.
- They worked with the city to finance an outdoor renovation to water tighten the entire building (25 year warrantee) and fix areas that had been damaged.
- With assistance from Rotary and the Optimist they were able to renovate the Children's Library to make in more comfortable and appealing to the youth.
Some of the current services/resources provided
Library has over 45,000 items in collection; including books, 2000 DVDS, CDs, audio books, and large print books.
They offer free WI-FI and have available meeting rooms.
Summer Book Clubs, Adult and Youth Reading Lists, A Mid-Summer's Night Reading, etc.
Continue upkeep of building comes from their tork funds (.167& right now which equals about 35,000), and interest from their fund at the Highland Community Foundation. These funds are helpful but not enough to maintain and repair. The Library continues to plan a fundraiser and look for creative ways to help raise needs funds. MARK YOUR CALENDARS for the Annual Christmas Dinner on December 1st (180 days away). This event raised $6000 last year and a $10,000 donation to the Foundation was also made.
Future Needs
- Upstairs Flooring
- Ceiling Tiles
- Single pane windows need to be replaced to double pane.
- Children's Library Entrance needs to be replaced to become handicap accessible.
- Desire to relocate board room to create space for adult library expansion
- Improve landscape to add outdoor reading areas
- Parking Lot proposal with the City of Highland

Angela thanked Rotary again for their help to create a place that as the wall states to inspire children to "Make each day a Story worth telling." |
