PROGRAM: Terry Lammers, Rotary International Convention Report

Just the amount of people 20,000 + Rotarians from several different countries.  I met and spoke with many people including people from

Bangladesh

 Sri Lanka

Sear Leon

Nigera

Uganda

India

Japan

Russia

France

Australia

Korea

It caught me a little off guard to hear a comment from a Rotarian at a pub asking me if "I was from America?"

We met the person the wrote the song "Viva La Rotary".

We met Ray Klinghoef and the next RI President at the "Heart of America Breakfast."  We thought it was just going to be for our district but there were 5000+ people there.

There was an informational hall full of tables with resources for local clubs. A section was dedicated to water projects.  We have designated our Memorial Funds for Well Projects and are currently looking for an avenue for $2000.  Two sources I found were:

  • Rotary Club of Tulsa doing wells in Nicaraqua
  • Water & Sanitation Rotarian Action Group  (WASRAG)

Some interesting information I found out about clean water is:

  • 80% of all sickness and disease - killing more people including war - is simply a result of unsafe water and lack of basic sanitation.
  • The biggest killer of children under 5 is unsafe water: 1.8 million children die every year - ONE child every 17 seconds and 5,000 children will die today because of unsafe drinking water.

We also may have a source for a project right in our back door with Farther Paul from the St. Paul Parish who is from Khana and mentioned the village he came from would be a good candidate.

POLIO PLUS

Bill Gates speech - Polio is the number one initiative of the Bill and Milinda Gates Foundation (you can listen to this speach in its full by going to the foundation website).  Bill shared that they are constantly running analysis to monitor outbreaks and to see if areas need to be revaccinated (sometimes takes 2-3 years).  In areas like Afganistan they have literally stopped wars for 24 hours to vaccinate children.

We are  this close.      2010      2011

Pakistan                      144         40 (cases found)

Afganistan                   25            2

India                           42            3

Nigeria                        21            9

GLOBALLY              1288        166

OTHER VARIOUS INTERESTING INFO

  • Individuals serve a 6 year term on the Rotary Foundation board in order to keep continuity of vision.
  • Discussion is being held as to whether to hire a Rotary President to verse having an annual term to also help with continuity.  Usually takes a year to get acclimated and then the term is up.  This may also help to get a younger person able to serve in this position which may help to drive membership and build rotary into the next generation.
  • There are many clubs who spend a lot of time serving together instead of making financial donations; for example a service oriented club that is hands on is a person I talked to from Billings MT that said we don't do fundraisers - we right a check.
