PROGRAM: Protect yourself from Identity Theft, Cindy Ray & Jane Morris from Bank of Edwardsville

Cindy Ray specializes in protecting invidiuals from fraud and offered a lot of tips to protect yourself.

  • Do not carry your social security card.
  • Carry only the credit cards you plan to use this week.  Keep your pin numbers and passwords in a separate place (not in your wallet).
  • Place the Credit Card Company phone numbers in your cell phone incase your wallet is stolen so you can call and report immediately.
  • Take advantage of the Opt out programs to no long receive any pre-approved credit offers in the mail by calling 888-567-8688 and the National Do Not Call List by calling 888-382-1222.
  • Obtain your free credit reports quarterly by staggering the three companies by going to www.annualcreditreport.com.
  • Can freeze your credit to protect from any activity and then unfreeze when you want to make a big purchase.
  • Purchase a locked mail box.
  • Use your shredders for documents you no long need.
  • Do not have important items laying around or easily accessible in your house.
  • Use online bill pay instead of check mailing.
  • Set parameters for your family on Facebook to protect you from the wrong people knowing your whereabouts and activities.
  • If you are a victim contact the Federal Trade Commission (www.ftc.gov), the three credit bureaus, and close compromised accounts.

Jane Morris specializes in internet fraud and offered the following tips & cautions for protection.

  • The computer can be the best way to pay bills and manage finances but you have to beware of malware and ploys to pull information form your database.
  • One way malware is installed is when you are searching the web and pop-up stats that your anti-virus scan is out of date and to renew/install pay $39.95 now to update. This is often malicious and allows malware to be installed as well as gives them credit card information.
  • If you are running ACH transfers, automatic payroll, online banking you may want to use a separate computer to ensure that it is secure.  This will limit malware and virus since you are not downloading or searching the web.
  • Best defense is to be a wise consumer and if something looks odd it probably is!
  • Track transactions every 2 weeks instead of waiting until a billing statement comes in to view activity.  Especially important if you have gone on vacation and have out of the ordinary activity.
  • Contact your local police first if you are a victim of internet fraud and depending on the circumstances the FBI has been led the investigations of internet fraud and may get involved.

Example of maleware in action:

Zeus Trojan was downloaded on to computers as a virus protection and ran in the background waiting until you accessed a bank site and then turned on to report usernames and passwords to the controller.  At times it could actually intercept an online banking session and run ACH transfers in the background up to $10,000 without putting up a red flag for your local bank.  Often times the controller was in Eastern Eurpore and had previously hired "financial assistants" in the US who had set up accounts and then would take the money out of the bank and wire them through Western Union, which is pretty unsecured way to transfer funds.

For more information on how to protect your identity and computer from fraud contact the Bank of Edwardsville or your local bank.
