| PROGRAM: Thomas Hill, Federal Estate Taxes | | |
Tom shared that the Federal Estate Tax was reinstated for the next two year period. Upon death an individual's estate can be taxed if fits the requirements. There is a current exemption of $5 million/ $10 million for spouses anything over the $5m is taxed at 35%. A tax change for this year is the marriage of the federal estate and gift tax. If you have a significant amount of money that you plan to pass on upon your demise, you should consider gifting now while it will not be taxed and keep it from being taxed later. Another tax change was the income tax basis was also reinstated allowing you to step-up to the current value of the estate before you pay taxes on the income.
Congress will revisit these laws in 2012 and could lower the extention to 1 million. If you have questions, please contact Tom.
