COMMUNITY SERVICE - Kevin Dewaele

Opportunity to serve Jan 29-30 and Feb 4th for the Hard Road Production of Mid-Life Crisis.  See Kevin for available spots.

The cast of this wacky musical takes a comic look at the many "wrinkles" faced in middle-age.  From hot flashes and reading glasses to mammograms and prostate checks, audiences are sure to relate to this hilarious, and sometimes touching, musical.  Think Saturday Night Live, set to music, focused on the all-too-familiar aspects of reaching your 40s, 50s and beyond.  It doesn't matter if you are approaching, experiencing or have long passed middle-age, this show will keep you laughing...all the way to the nursing home.

* There's also still tickets available!

PROGRAM:
Mike Sutton, County School Tax

County School Facility Sales Tax

  • Originated in Iowa in 1998 and has been adopted by all Iowa Counties
  • Became a law in Illinois in 2007 and approved by 9 counties and 45 districts to date
  • Sales tax is 1 cent per dollar spent
  • Property owners in counties that have enacted the County School Facility Sales Tax have seen a reduction in property tax rates.
  • Money is held locally by the Regional Office of Education.
  • Revenue generated from the sales tax can only be used for the following:
    • Abatement of Property Taxes levied to pay bonds issued for capitol purposes
    • Demolition of Facilities
    • New facilities
    • Additions & renovations
    • Land acquisitions
    • Ongoing Maintenance
    • Architectural Planning
    • Fire prevention & life safety
    • Disabled access & security
    • Financing costs
    • Parking Lots
  • Cannot be used for:
    • Salaries and overhead
    • Busses
    • Furniture and equipment
    • Computers
    • Moveable equipment
  • What is not taxed:
    • Cars, Trucks, ATV's, and Motorcycles
    • Boats & RVs
    • Mobile Homes
    • Unprepared Food (groceries)
    • Drugs (including prescription, over-the-counter, and vitamins)
    • Farm equipment & parts
    • Farm Implements

Overall research shows that the 1% county wide tax will save HSD residents money on property taxes but supply extra funding for necessary projects.  The HSD plans to abate 66.67 (2/3rds) of the funds and then use the remaining funds for the projects instead of levying property taxes.  The current numbers show that there will be no money loss from the levees/ municipalities.  The other benefit is that this will allow madison county school districts to receive income from shoppers outside of madison county (40% of revenue produced).  For more information contact Mike Sutton.
