PROGRAM: Frank Miles, Madison County Treasurer "Understanding the Real Estate Property Tax Cycle"
| | |
.Frank is the 27th treasurer and is elected by the MC board. He has previously served in other positions such as city manager, comptroller, and city planner. He is married with children ages 3-25 and lives in Edwardsville.
Frank has been touring Madison County speaking to various service organizations, senior groups, homecomings/fairs, and City councils for the one purpose of educating the people on the process of property tax.
The property tax cycle is a two year cycle that has many players involved. The treasurer serves only to collect and distribute funds. He does not set assessments for any properties. A property is assesed based on the fair market value and plugged into a formula using the current tax rate. If your receive notice of your asssessment and believe that it is incorrect, an appeal can be placed to reconsider and update the market value. Seniors and disabled individuals have added deductions that can be credited to their taxes as well. For individuals who qualify there are also tax relief programs such as circuit breakers and income tax senior tax defferal. There are various payment options available, including a quarterly tax option.
The property tax dollars collected in Madison County are dispersed on the dollar as follows:
- 63c Schools
- 16c Cities/Villiages
- 8c Other districts (such as libraries)
- 8c County
- 5c Townships
For more questions on your property tax call the help desk at 618-692-6260 or go to the website madcotreasurer.org. |
