Mike Sutton
Highland Superintendent of Schools
Mike Sutton gave us our program today, and a very good one at that. Even Kyle McCarter was present for the program. Mike opened the program laying out 4 of the district's priority goals for 2009-2010. They are striving to have all students K-2 reading at grade level before they enter the 3rd grade. They are working towards greater problem solving skills in math. Teachers are focusing on "differentiating instruction" in the classrooms. They are also focusing on the VIP's of character education.
Mike also touched briefly on where the school's funding comes from, how it is calculated, what affects it, and the shortfall they will be facing with next years budget. He warned there would have to be staff & program cuts to make up for the shortfall. He also spoke about the possible "Balanced School Calendar," which is picking up initiative. There are some pros and cons that still need weighed out, but it could be implemented in the near future.
