Citrus Sales - The first sign up sheet went around to volunteer to help sell Citrus at Walmart on Dec. 4, 5, and 6.  If you haven't signed up yet to help sell, please contact me, Angie Fears, either at our next meeting or at my work number,  654-4603.  I have a lot of shifts open and can use a lot of help this year.  Also, the oranges are scheduled to be delivered next Tuesday, the 1st, and we will begin bagging at 6:00pm at Oberbeck Grain.  Delivery for pre-sales will be done on December 4th, and I could use someone to start helping me deliver at 9:00 am that day.

Christmas Party - A head count was taken for our annual Christmas party.  It will be held on December 8th, at the VFW, catered by Popeye's Chophouse, and there will be entertainment and a Christmas Ornament Exchange.  Please contact Wayne Steiner if you need to RSVP yet.

Board Meeting - Nest Wed, Dec. 2nd, 8:00am at the Korte Co.

PROGRAM
11-24-2009 Terry Bell

Terry Bell
Police Chief of Highland's Police Department

Our very own Rotarian, Terry Bell, gave us our program today and gave us an overview of where the Highland PD is today and some of the things they do.  The PD currently employs 8 full time officers and 8 civilian employees.  They have 2 detectives on staff and each patrol shift consists of 1 sergeant and 3 patrolmen.  They operate on a $2.3 million dollar budget.  Over the last year, they have lost 2 positions and had to cut overtime pay by 10% due to the decrease in the budget due to the overall economy.

Some of the things the Highland PD is currently involved in include ILEAS, Operation Falcon, Bike Patrol, National Night Out, Bike Rodeo, Cops grants, Adopt a Street, Special Olympics, Crime trend mapping and Code Red.  Also, for the first time in roughly 30 years, one of our officers, Carl Schlarman is in the FBI Academy.

Officer Bell also gave us some good information regarding the Code Red Sign up and some other useful information regarding our city's website, www.highlandil.gov.  He also said that Highland's biggest crime problem is theft, but there hasn't been an actual break in over 3 years.  The thieves are more opportunistic, and are getting lucky with unlocked door handles!
