Rotary Scholarships - Rotary International offers scholarships for college students or University teachers who might be interesed in studying or teaching abroad during 2010 - 2011.  If you know of anyone who might be interested, please contact Bill.
LITERACY PROJECT - Wayne Steiner
Wayne says he has been touched (and believes we all will be) by the generosity of the community involving our Literacy Program. As an example he had a bank customer drop off a truckload (450 books) of books and other art supplies and toys for our school in West Virginia. He asks us to continue to promote this great cause.

After the meeting, Wayne found out that the school would also be interested in any musical instuments for their band program.  So add that to your list of things to look for during your spring cleaning!
FISH RACE - Rick Ringwald
Logo -Fish Race
Rick reminded us about ticket sales for the Fish Race. So far we have only sold 315 tickets for a total of $1575. Please sell your tickets!! We need to minimally cover our $3000 prize money and would like to realize a profit. Tickets are due to Rick by March 17th.  Time is running out - so get out and sell!  Don't wait until the last minute.
COMMUNITY SERVICE - Jan Brinker

SONGS
Tom and Adrian had us sing "Hey Look Me Over" and "Roll Rotary". Considering that both these songs were probably written before more than half our members were born, we didn't sound too bad.
180 SECONDS of FAME
Terry Bell

03-10-09 Terry Bell

Terry has been approved as our newest member and he was chosen to tell us about himself for approximately 3 minutes.  Terry has been Highland's Chief of Police for one month. He hails from Mattoon where he was born and graduated High School. He played ball at Lakeland College and McKendree College and finished his education at SLU and Lindenwood. He served with the Marines and drove an amphibious tank. That's where his interest in law enforcement began. He recently retired after 20 years from the Collinsville Police force. He is married to Brenna and has two daughters, Jessice and Jenna, ages 10 and 12. His thoughts and prayers went out to those at the Maryville Church as well. He was a member there for 7 years and knew the pastor who was killed. He wants us to know that if there's anything the Highland PD can do for you, please let him know.

PROGRAM
Kevin Dewaele - Investing in a Turbulent Market

03-10-09 Kevin Dewaele
Kevin Dewaele discusses a troubling economy

Kevin Dewaele spoke to us about "Investing in a Turbulent Market".  His presentation was put together by Edward Jones Chief Market Strategist, Alan Skranka. There have been 11 recessions since 1945 and 32 bear markets with 20% drop in the market over the past 108 years. He told us that 'panic is not an effective strategy'.
After the presentation Bill urged us to spend money and not participate in the recession. If we spend money, manufacturers will start building products again and people will get their jobs back and...I believe he said, and I quote . . . well, his exact words are not that important.  Let's just forget the politicians get the economy back on track ourselves.
