Connect Highland
Jim Nickerson and Wayne Steiner discuss "Connect Highland"
Wayne Steiner and his co-presenter, Jim Nickerson, discussed "Connect Highland," the fiber optic telecommunications system presently under consideration by the City of Highland.
Wayne explained that this has been on ongoing project for the past few years and has finally come to the point where we, as citizens, can now vote on it. The business plan has been approved and is available for review at city hall. A citizen's committee has been working on various aspects of the project for the last two years and Jim shared the vision of the committee and how this will position Highland for economic growth and retention of existing businesses. In an upcoming April vote, there will be three questions on the ballot on which the residents may vote.. They stressed that this is not a TAX referendum. It is a referendum that, if passed, will allow the city council to pursue setting up a new utility for telephone, data and television services - essentially a communications utility - IF the city council feels it can be properly engineered, bonded and installed. A "yes" vote does not automatically mean the council will proceed forward, it simply gives them the option to do so.
"Connect Highland" will come to a vote on April 7, 2009. Both Wayne and Jim encouraged all to vote for the initiative. | |
