Meeting each TUESDAY at Michael's Restaurant, 415 Broadway - 12:00 noon
NEXT MEETING  - TUESDAY, January 13th at Michael's Restaurant located at 415 Broadway in Highland at 12 noon.
INTRO
The meeting was opened with the Pledge of Allegiance.  President Bill Sullivan started the meeting; Fr. Peters led us in prayer.
GUESTS
Antonia (our foreign exchange student), Travis Briner and Darin Girdler.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
-  Angie Fears announced that Citrus sales raised $3,900 this year -$400 more than last year.  Great Job Angie & Bob! Thanks for all your hard work.   
-  ROTARY HAPPY HOUR is Thursday, January 29th at Marx Brothers at 5 p.m.  If you haven't been to one of our happy hours, now is the time to try one out.
-  Bill gave a thank you gift to our waitresses, Savannah Michael and Loretta Copeland, for taking such good care of us each and every week. 
-  Bill presented Tom Wehrle with a 3-sapphire Paul Harris Fellow pin in recognition for his outstanding support of the Rotary Foundation.
COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES
01/11/09  The Boy Scouts are looking for people to help with their annual Pancake Breakfast.   If you have some time, and are willing to help out, please contact Kevin McConville at 618-401-8104.
 
01/16/09  Highland Chamber of Commerce - there is an opportunity to help work on decorations for the chamber valentine party.  Call the Chamber office for more details. 
 
01/23/09  The Pregnancy Care Center is looking for volunteers to work their Trivia Night at the KC Hall.  Contact the Pregnancy Care Center (654-3732) or Carrie Adolph for more information. 
 
The Pregnancy Care is also looking for babysitters every Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Mark Latham
 
Mark was born in Streeter, Il, where his father was an X-ray tech and his mother worked at the hospital.  Mark attended John Brown University in Ark. He received  a degree in education.  What was his favorite job?  Coaching swimming.  He married Mary Lee (Barnes) who is originally from Highland. They have been married 32 years and have one son, Derek.  How did he go from a teaching degree to city management?  He was ask to take an interim job in another city, and the rest is history.  Mark was inducted into the Hall of Fame at John Brown University for Meritorious Achievement.  Mark helped JBU gain success in the water as a swimmer for 4 years (1973-1977).  After the men's swimming program was discontinued ,he returned in 1984 to help reinstate the program for men and create a new program for women.  During that time, he served as coach for both teams.

$375 in the pot this week.  Holli's table had the winning ticket and since she wasn't participating this week, she drew the 4 of Clubs...better luck next time!
                           
FINES:
A $1.00 fine if you've never had a child in either the Boy Scouts or the Girl Scouts.  Fr. Peters was deemed exempt from the fine.

HAPPY BUCKS:
Tom Wehrle put in 2 happy bucks. The first was for a great time in Colorado and that he was able to ski with no injuries and the second was for receiving the Paul Harris Fellow 3-sapphire award.

Boy Scouts - Travis

Darin Girdler introduced Travis Briner, Cahokia Mounds District Executive of  Trails West Boy Scout Council.  He told us how the Friends of Scouting works and all the good they do in our communities.  He also told us that Trails West Council and Okaw Valley Council were considering consolidating to serve our area in a more efficient capacity.  He put a plug in for the Boy Scout Pancake Breakfast next Sunday at the Knights of Columbus Hall from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.  So let's all be supportive and head for the Pancake Breakfast.
