The Museum's 1941 fire truck was on display for the Anniversary Ceremony. The truck served at Hunter Army Airfield during and after World War II. The Museum is planning on restoring the truck to its World War II paint scheme, making the fire truck just as it was when it served while B-17's were leaving Hunter Army Airfield during World War II.

Restoration Project Update |
The B-17 Restoration crews have successfully completed Phase 1 of the Restoration Project: removal of preservative coatings and materials applied to the aircraft, as well as 30 years of operational debris residue that accumulated on the aircraft.
The crew members are focusing on the interior of the B-17 with all team members applying paint stripper throughout the fuselage. 60 years of layered paint is being removed.
All of the parts and equipment from the B-17 have been removed from the aircraft and have been meticulously catalogued. This is a major step in beginning to re-equip the aircraft with her operational equipment which would have been on the original "City of Savannah".
The goal of our restoration is to have the B-17, "City of Savannah" restored to its original factory condition. You can be a part of history and the Museum's B-17 Project. The Museum appreciates all financial gifts, and for $100 or more you will receive a certificate of participation, suitable for framing, which recognizes your part in this historic Museum event. Please make checks payable to "B-17 Project" and mail to:

The Casablanca Conference and the Eighth Air Force
Casablanca Conference | The decision that would eventually turn the Eighth Air Force
into a true machine of mass destruction was made in January 1943 at a meeting
between [President Franklin] Roosevelt and [British Prime Minister Winston]
Churchill at Casablanca, on the Atlantic coast
of French Morocco*. The conference's most significant accomplishment was the Casablanca
Declaration, in which the Allies called for the unconditional surrender
of the Axis Powers. In addition, several significant
strategic military issues were agreed upon.
The invasion of Northern Europe was pushed back another year in favor of
a Mediterranean campaign, which would start the following summer in Sicily.

Museum Volunteer Betty Robarts by Heather Thies
|
Betty Robarts was born and
raised in northern Minnesota. When America became involved in World
War II, Betty was eager to do her part for the war effort. Betty joined the WAVES (Women's Navy) in
January 1943. Betty hoped she might be
stationed near the beach but the Navy assigned her to Dayton, Ohio. Betty worked on war materials but learned in 1995
exactly how important her work for the WAVES had been. Betty had been assigned to a top secret
classified program entitled ULTRA. This
program made the machines which decoded messages written by the German Enigma
coding machine. Betty was interviewed
and featured in a documentary titled "Dayton Codebreakers" about the ULTRA
program.

David Lord's We're Coming Home by Vivian Rogers-Price

David Lord, We're Comin' Home! 1990's Watercolor on paper. Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum
 | Robert S. Johnson was the fourth
highest scoring American ace of World War II and finished the war with
twenty-seven confirmed victories. He served
with the 56th Fighter Group. In 1999 the
Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum
received the Robert S. Johnson Collection, but very little was known about the
art work included in the donation. When
guest curator Keith Ferris selected one of the framed works from this
collection to hang in the Permanent Collection Exhibit on display in the Colonial
Group, Inc. Art Gallery, additional research was conducted and the artist,
David Lord contacted. Read Further

Museum Update
by Henry Skipper
|
On May 22nd The Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum held its first ever Atlanta fund raising event, the "Boots, Blue Jeans, Bomber Jackets, and Barbecue." The event was held at the beautiful Chastain House Park and was designed to provide support for the Museum, honor the many veterans who attended, and honor the spirit of those who could not. Over 250 people attended. Honorary Chairman for the event was Hap Chandler, WWII veteran from the 491st Bomb Group, 8th Air Force. The fundraiser was a great success due to the extraordinary efforts of the event chair Harriett Adams, and her committee. Harriett not only organized and coordinated the event but secured over 200 silent auction items.
Harriett Adams, Henry Skipper, Jane Harper | An article that appeared in the Atlanta Journal Constitution several days prior to the 22nd featured interviews with several WWII veterans. Interest in attending then grew throughout the Atlanta area. It has been a goal of the Museum to increase awareness for the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum in Atlanta and we certainly succeeded in doing that. The names of those who were Host Sponsors for the event are listed in this newsletter. Thanks to everyone who made the "Boots, Blue Jeans, Bomber Jackets, and Barbecue" event such a success.
