Restoration Project Update

 B17

The hard work has paid off. The tail section, fuselage, upper and lower wings and engines are completely cleaned and polished to a brilliance that surely none would have thought possible sixteen months ago. The next step will be a final touch up of the horizontal stabilizers, then anti-corrosion cleaning of the fuselage.
The City of Savannah Crew is very honored to have Brigadier General Jeffrey Phillips start his first shift as the newest restoration volunteer. The General will be working with the Saturday crew in completing the final polishing and planning steps to move the aircraft to its final resting place in the Combat Gallery.
The Coastal Amateur Radio Society's B-17 Team will be conducting its first public radio demonstration at the Mighty Eighty Eighth Air Force Museum in conjunction with the Armed Forces Day Celebration on Saturday, the 15th of May. The B-17's 1945 BC-348 Radio Receiver will be set up under the the left wing of the plane for guests to experience the live broadcast throughout the day. If you would like to learn more about the radio broadcast, tune into Guy McDonald's CARS Blog.

The goal of our restoration is to have the B-17, "City of Savannah" restored to its original factory condition. You can be a part of history and the Museum's B-17 Project. The Museum appreciates all financial gifts, and for $100 or more you will receive a certificate of participation, suitable for framing, which recognizes your part in this historic Museum event. Please make checks payable to "B-17 Project" and mail to:

Museum Volunteer Paul Grassey
By Heather Thies

Paul Grassey

World War II Veteran of the month Paul Grassey,
and his crew
Grassey and crew
Paul Grassey left Virginia Tech Military School and enlisted in the Army Air Force in November 1942.  He received his wings at Stutggart, Arkansas and was assigned to B-24's.  He received orders for the 446th Bombardment Group, 8th Air Force, Bungay, England and flew thirteen combat missions.

After the war, Paul returned to school and graduated in 1948 from Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania.  During school, he participated in the first College World Series in baseball.

Paul was employed with the Burroughs Corporation (in computer sales management) for thirty seven years.  After "retiring" from Burroughs, he became Director of Marketing for Sweda International, Cash Registers and Point of Sales Systems.  In 1988, Paul moved to Savannah and began working for Heartland Payment Systems.  He continues today to market credit card and payroll processing systems for them.

Paul GrasseyPaul has served as a docent for the museum since the day it opened and continues to volunteer a great deal of time to help visitors understand the role the 8th Air Force played in ending the the war in Europe. Over the past fourteen years he has given hundreds of presentations, tours and interviews throughout the museum and Georgia in support of the museum and veteran's causes.  Paul is currently a member of the Board of Trustees of the Museum.  He took a trip to Washington D.C. as a part of the Honor Flight Program.

Paul became a member of the Savannah Wing of the Eighth Air Force Historical Society and served as is commander for three years and Board Chairman for four years.  In this capacity he supported the establishment of the Birthplace Chapter.

Paul is married to a former Air Force nurse, Nancy.  They have four children, seven grandchildren and three great grand children

The Lights Come On Again

Winston Churchill
Winston Churchill
Sixty five years ago this month the world celebrated Victory Over Europe Day (V-E Day).  On May 7, 1945 the German Army signed an instrument of unconditional surrender at Eisenhower's headquarters at Rheims, France.  On May 8, 1945 the Allies officially declared this date V-E or Liberation Day across Europe.  All over England the Brits uproariously celebrated the end of the war and the continual night time bombing of their homeland.

VE Day

After years of blackouts, England celebrated a return to peacetime. Although finished fighting in Europe, America and other Allied countries were not done with the war. It would take several more months of brutal fighting to end the Pacific Theater of war with Japan.

Base Air Depot 2 Historical Collection
by  Vivian Rogers-Price

T. T. Tryba carved and painted this wooden maintenance division organizational chart.
Chart
The Roger A. Freeman Eighth Air Force Research Center is dedicated to promoting research on Eighth Air Force history and to expanding its priceless collection of over nine thousand books significant to the history of the Eighth Air Force as well as original manuscripts, photographs, oral history interviews and personal accounts, artifacts and works of art.  Now following their final reunion the BAD 2 Association has donated their historical collection to the research center.  In doing this they join other Eighth Air Force Bomb Group and Fighter Group Associations including the 303rd Bomb Group, the 357th Fighter Group, and the 491st Bomb Group.  BAD 2 or Base Air Depot 2 was stationed at Warton, England and concentrated on maintenance of B-24 Liberators and P-51 Mustangs.  The men of BAD 2 prepared these aircraft for combat and repaired those with major battle damage.  By the end of the war over 10,000 aircraft had been processed by BAD 2.

This sign marked the entrance to BAD 2
Warton Sign

Two items included in the recently received BAD 2 collection were taken to each of their reunions.  One is the original air base sign for Warton that hung at the base entrance during World War II.  A second item is a painted and carved wooden maintenance division organizational chart.  Crafted by T. T. Tryba about twenty years ago, this organizational chart displays a tiger and a P-51 Mustang with "Spare Parts" carved above the wing.  Next is the actual chart in the form of a tree with branches.  Base Headquarters forms the trunk with branches for the mess hall, housing, transport, weight and balance, hydraulics, sheet metal, test flights, props, engine overhaul, aircraft maintenance, supply, inspection, communications, machine shop, welding, instrument overhaul, access overhaul, armament, fueling, and motor pool.  Mr. Tryba worked in maintenance inspection, especially accident investigation, and his chart demonstrates the important role played by BAD 2.

The Tribute Towers
Columbarium BenchThe Veterans Tribute Towers stand as a lasting tribute to honor the past of America's veterans, as a salute to our present veterans, and an inspiration for all to witness.

Our goal is to pay tribute to all military personnel from every service branch, and from every time period in American History. These are the brave men and women who have sacrificed to keep this nation free for
the last 233 years and they deserve our respect. Columbarium Bricks

The Veteran Tribute Towers is a way for you to pay tribute to our fallen heroes; and to remember the servicemen and women who are no longer with us today.

Within these towers you are able to pay homage to Medal of Honor Recipients, Prisoners of War, Generals and Admirals, as well as the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines whose story has not been told. They all performed honorable service to this nation, and many of them gave their life to keep us free. The Tribute Towers are solid red Granite and the plaques are magnificent Bronze.
