The Floyd T. Inman Collection
by Vivian Rogers-Price |
In 1944 Floyd Inman was flying with the 8th air force as a tail gunner in the 447th Bomb Group. Thinking of him on February 14,1944; his parents back in White Cottage, Ohio, sent this package with a Morrison Air corps Pen and Pencil set and two packages of Dentyne gum. Inman never recieved the parcel because on January 29, 1944 he flew on a mission to bomb the Marshalling yards at Frankfurt, Germany in the B-17G, The Devil's Mate. Immediately after "bombs away" this B-17 left the formation due to what was believed to be an oxygen failure and then was shot down by fighters. The entire crew was Killed in Action. The package Inman's parents had sent him was returned to them with the stamped notation on the address "Return to Sender." They kept it with them for the rest of their lives. In 1980 Captain William H. Fleming, USNR-Ret purchased it at an estate auction. He recently donated it to the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum.
