The Homestead Exemption Program
Franklin County Auditor Clarence E. Mingo, II detailed a very beneficial program during the Micro Entrepreneur Awards.
The Homestead Exemption program was originally introduced for low-income homeowners age 65 and older to help alleviate the burden of tax increases caused by escalating property values. However, in 2007 the Ohio General Assembly enacted a new, expanded Homestead Exemption that provides property tax relief to all qualified senior citizens and permanently and totally disabled homeowners.
All homeowners who qualify for the Homestead Exemption will receive a flat $25,000 property tax exemption on the market value of their home. The filing deadline is the first Monday in June.
