NATIONAL WOMEN BUILD 2012
|
In May, HFH GLA, HFHI and Lowe's joined together for a special build day during the 2012 National Women Build Week (NWBW)! This event is a nationwide initiative of Habtiat's Women Build Program, developed in partnership with Lowe's, a proud sponsor since 2004. It was a great day filled with more than 30 POWER WOMEN who helped renovate a home in Long Beach. HFH GLA friend and National Spokeswoman for the NWBW, Kristina Guerrero was on site with her mom and sister and shared their story on how their own family was empowered through an affordable housing program like Habitat in Washington state. Check out her touching testimony HERE. Check our photos from the event HERE!

THANK YOU LCDQ!
| |
On behalf of HFH GLA, we would like to thank La Cienega Design Quarter (LCDQ) and LEGENDS 2012 for hosting such an amazing event benefiting our affiliate!
Now in its fourth consecutive year, LEGENDS is a three-day event that has attracted over 10,000 designers and enthusiasts and is a prominent fixture on the national design event calendar. A fusion of art, fashion, design and culture, LEGENDS provides a unique combination of education and entertainment for those who appreciate design.
Between the VIP passes which sold for $150 per day and the LCDQ/Legends charity sale on One Kings Lane, more than $35,000 was raised for HFH GLA and will go into building homes for hardworking, low-income families and individuals in greater Los Angeles. A special shout out to HFH GLA Board Member, Gerry Bross of Hollywood Sierra Kitchens, for bringing us this wonderful opportunity!

HFH GLA CHOSEN FOR INTERFAITH PILOT PROGRAM
| |
HFH GLA has learned that it is one of six Habitat for Humanity affiliates nationwide to be selected for Habitat for Humanity International's Interfaith Pilot Program, along with affiliates in Atlanta, Denver, Grand Rapids, New York City, and Seattle! The program will bring together Los Angeles County's diverse religious and spiritual traditions to build and renovate homes and advocate for fair and adequate housing.
|
National Day of Prayer 2012
|
HFH GLA launched the Interfaith Program on May 3, the National Day of Prayer, with a volunteer build day. Members of several faith traditions from across greater Los Angeles came together to help renovate a home in the City of Lynwood. Those interested in getting involved in the program should contact HFH GLA's Faith Relations Manager, Chris Untiet, at chrisu@habitatla.org.

HOME REPAIR WITH REGENCY CENTERS
| |
Last month, Regency Centers' volunteers helped perform critical home repairs on the home of a Korean war veteran in the City of Inglewood. The homeowner, Lee Roberson and his wife have lived in their home in Inglewood since the 1970's.
|
Regency Centers' Volunteers
|
Volunteers arrived bright and early ready to repaint the Roberson home and replace the fence in the back yard. Mr. Roberson was very grateful for all of the volunteers and to be a part of HFH GLA's home repair program, which he learned of at our homeownership fair this past February. He is spreading the word to other Veterans in need on his block and those he knows in the Los Angeles area through his networks. What a wonderful partner! In addition, Regency Centers was so thrilled with the experience, they are already planning on helping us propel this program through funding and volunteerism again next fiscal year! Thank you!

Thrivent Builds Kickoff Celebration
|
Earlier this month, HFH GLA kicked off the first day of the 2012
Thrivent Builds, with area Lutheran Congregations on a home in Lynwood, CA. "Every year that we can continue to partner with Thrivent Financial is a blessing," said Erin Rank, President/CEO of HFH GLA. "Thrivent's commitment to affordable housing is helping to uplift congregations, communities and individuals right here in Los Angeles and around the world."
This is the seventh home sponsored by Thrivent Financial in greater Los Angeles. Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity is a multi-year, multi-million dollar partnership between Thrivent Financial and Habitat for Humanity International. Over the last 7 years, Thrivent Financial has committed $160 million and partnered with Habitat for Humanity affiliates and Lutheran churches across the country and around the world to sponsor more than 1,600 affordable homes. Those interested in getting involved with this year's project in Lynwood should contact
Chris Untiet, HFH GLA Faith Relations Manager, at chrisu@habitatla.org.

HFH GLA PARTNER HOMEOWNER HIGHLIGHT
| | In 2009, Habitat for Humanity International and seven U.S. Habitat affiliates received Neighborhood Stabilization funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Combining this with support from non-governmental sources, Habitat has committed to providing 1,062 U.S. families with affordable housing by February 2013. Amanda Jordan is one of those families; she moved her three children into an NSP-funded home on Easter Sunday this spring, thanks to the support of Habitat of greater Los Angeles.
Being a homeowner has been a total dream come true! I'm in a stable home. I live in a safer neighborhood to raise my three children: 11-year-old Freddie and daughters Fa'Ness, 7, and Faith, 2. My children and I used to share one bedroom in a home filled with 13 people. Now, my children and I have our own personal space with a yard of our own.
The Neighborhood Stabilization Program has been such a blessing. My kids are much happier than before. And my neighbors were excited to meet me as a homeowner. Before our house was renovated, it sat abandoned with squatters living in it.
Habitat came along with this wonderful program to help low-income families such as mine afford a home and make over a neighborhood. I thank God every chance I get for such a wonderful blessing and for meeting such wonderful people.

THANK YOU FOR CHIPPING IN!
| |
HFH GLA hit a homerun last week in the popchips Game Changers competition, scoring in the TOP 5! As one of the top 5 charities chosen, we have WON a year supply of popchips and the chance to win a day with LA Dodgers Dee Gordon.
Winning the final leg of this competition could help HFH GLA in a number of ways as Dee Gordon's involvement can help raise awareness about the affordable housing crisis in LA County; how important homeownership is to families' health and happiness and how volunteering can change your perspective about the community you live in.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR VOTES! |
MEET AND GREET WITH NCIS | | On May 1, NCIS fan, Adam Cohen, celebrated his 21st birthday in a big way! Our friends at NCIS generously donated a VIP Lunch Experience with Rocky Carroll to be auctioned on CharityBuzz.com, benefiting HFH GLA. Adam's family jumped at the opportunity to surprise him with the experience of a lifetime and give back to the community at the same time. Read about Adam's "overwhelming" experience HERE!
