Greetings!
Thank you for helping Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles (HFH GLA) commemorate a remarkable 20th Anniversary year in 2010. Here are a few highlights from some of our recent events. We invite you to read more and to continue helping us build hope, lives and communities. |
Raising Walls, Building Hope
On March 3rd, Long Beach Mayor Bob Foster, HFH GLA, house sponsors and partner family Enrique and Sonia Lopez (pictured) raised the first wall of the new four-bedroom, two-bath Habitat for Humanity home in Long Beach. The affordable and sustainable home being built for the Lopez family of five should be completed by the end of the year.
Several sponsors, including the Long Beach Housing Development Company, were on hand for the wall raising including the Gold Hammer Sponsor - Southern California Edison and Silver Hammer Sponsor - Union Bank. Also on hand were students from the Long Beach Unified School District's Architecture, Construction, and Engineering Academy (A.C.E.) who will be working on the Mayor's Build home during the construction period.
Other sponsors of the home include: Oxy Long Beach, Inc., AECOM, BNSF Railways, Jet Blue Airways, Meridiam Infrastructure, SA Recycling and Keesal, Young & Logan . This will be the 36th home HFH GLA has built in the city of Long Beach. |
2nd Annual House That General Hospital Fans Built
On Dec. 4, 2010 General Hospital cast members gathered for the Second Annual "House that General Hospital Fans Built." 15 General Hospital cast members joined more than 50 of their most loyal fans and HFH GLA partner homeowners as they worked on the 10 new sustainable homes in Lynwood, CA. HFH GLA would like to thank the General Hospital cast and fans for raising funds and awareness of affordable housing and for another memorable day for the partner homeowners.
General Hospital cast member volunteers included: Bradford Anderson ("Damian Spinelli"), Brandon Barash ("Johnny Zacchara"), Brianna Brown (Lisa Niles), Dominic Zamprogna ("Dante Falconeri"), Jane Elliot ("Tracy Quartermaine"), Jason Cook ("Matt Hunter"), Jason Thompson ("Patrick Drake"), Julie Berman ("Lulu Spencer"), Kimberly McCullough ("Robin Scorpio"), Kirsten Storms ("Maxie Jones"), Leslie Charleson ("Monica Quartermaine"), Lexi Ainsworth ("Kristina Davis"), Lisa LoCicero ("Olivia Falconeri"), Nathan Parsons ("Ethan Lovett") and Ronnie Marmo ("Ronnie Dimestico"). |
Castillo Dedication | |
"Dreams do come true" says new HFH GLA partner homeowner Wendy Castillo. Taking a major fixer-upper house in Long Beach and turning it into a beautiful, contemporary home for the Castillo family is just part of the job for HFH GLA. The Delta Air Lines sponsored home was turned from a neighborhood eye-sore to the pride of the neighborhood.
For more than eight weeks Delta Air Lines employees worked diligently to totally rehabilitate the three-bedroom, two-bathroom home. Wendy will share her new home with her mother and her two young children. Over 125 family and friends came out for the joyous dedication which included Delta Air Lines executives and employees, Long Beach Housing Development Company (LBHDC) representatives, including Patrick Brown - LBHDC Chair, city of Long Beach representatives, including Councilman Robert Garcia (CD 1) and HFH GLA staff and construction crew.

Coreas Dedication | |
December 18th was a big day for the Coreas family. On that day Betty Coreas and her two children received the keys to their newly built four-bedroom, two-bath HFH GLA home in Long Beach. Even the rain could not dampen the Coreas parade.
Over 150 volunteers, city of Long Beach officials, including Councilmember Robert Garcia (CD1), Stacy McDaniel - Vice Chair of the Long Beach Housing Development Company, Cub Scout Pack 75, HFH GLA President and CEO Erin Rank, HFH GLA Board Chair Craig Russell and board members Matt Petersen and Tom Clarke and of course the Coreas House Sponsor - Thrivent Financial for Lutherans volunteers were all on hand for this momentous, blissful occasion.
It was the 35th home HFH GLA built in the city of Long Beach. Betty, a single mother of two, lived in a crowded one bedroom apartment in a high crime neighborhood. "Having a home where each of my children can have a bedroom and I can finally have my own bathroom is like an answer to a prayer" said Betty. The sustainable LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified home was built in only seven months due to the tenacity of the Thrivent volunteers and the amazing HFH GLA construction crew. |
Good News on Ice | |
Immediately following a festive VIP Holiday reception hosted by AEG at the beautiful Target Terrace at Nokia Live for HFH GLA sponsors and volunteers on December 14th, HFH GLA with the help of Actor and Activist Ed Begley, Jr. surprised new Habitat for Humanity partner homeowners on the holiday ice skating rink in front of hundreds of guests and plaza visitors. The Royce family of five had no idea they had qualified to be a partner family until that evening's surprise announcement. HFH GLA board members and AEG executives were on hand to help deliver the blissful news. Construction will begin in spring on the Royce family home in Lawndale. |
