NEWSLETTEROCTOBER 2010

Greetings!

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles (HFH GLA) has had a lot to celebrate this year in addition to our 20th Anniversary. With the successful Grand Opening of our second ReStore in Norwalk to exciting and fun build days, HFH GLA has plenty of good news to share.  We invite you to read more about us in this issue.

You Can Own Your Own Home

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles has partnered with HUD on its Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP) to encourage the purchase of foreclosed properties and to stabilize communities that have suffered from foreclosures and abandonment.  More than 100 properties throughout Long Beach, South Gate and Lynwood will be available for purchase.

For more information about NSP eligibility requirements and the application process or other Habitat Homeownership Programs call Sylvia Bautista at 310-323-4663, ext. 118 or email sbautista@habitatla.org. 2nd ReStore Opens in Norwalk

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles opened its second ReStore in the city of Norwalk on August 7, 2010.  Hundreds of shoppers and guests joined the Habitat staff for the historic ribbon cutting.  On hand was the Honorable Mayor of Norwalk, Gordon Stefenhagen, Actor and Activist Ed Begley, Jr., City Council and Chamber members, HFH GLA Board Members and Habitat Partner Families.

The Norwalk ReStore marks the 700th Habitat ReStore in the United States.  HFH GLA has two ReStores, one in Gardena and now one in Norwalk.  The Gardena ReStore opened in 2004 and since then, has diverted over 5 million pounds of reusable resources from area landfills.  All of the proceeds from the ReStores help build more Habitat affordable housing for hard working, low-income families.

We need your donations! For donation pick ups and information call the ReStore Donations Coordinator, Nicki Cordero at 310-323-4663, ext. 127 or www.shophabitat.org. Please donate your reusable items to the ReStore today! Recycling Reusable Resources

On August 12, HFH GLA's Lynwood build site got a special visit by the Yo Gabba Gabba (YGG) Gang including DJ Lance Rock, Yo GG welcomeBrobee, Foofa, Muno, Toodee and Plex. The gang was there to greet volunteers, Habitat Partner Families and special invited guests.  A great day was had by all.  Several celebrities came out to play with Habitat and the Gang including Bobby Campo, Camille Guatry, Harvey Guillen, Amber Heard, Sanaa Lathan, Blake Lewis, Jaime Ray Newman, Stephanie Pratt, Monica Raymund, Ashlee Roberts, Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda, and Glynn Turman. Adding to the excitement of the day, presenting tour sponsor KIA motors donated a new 2011 Kia Sorento CUV to HFH GLA.

Our partnership with YGG involves over 50 affiliates across the U.S. One dollar from every ticket sold for Yo Gabba Gabba! Live!: There's a Party in My City! will be donated to the local Habitat affiliate in each tour city as well as proceeds from a VIP ticket auction for their local show. The YGG Gang will participate in various service projects aimed at building homes and hope in the cities they visit during their journey across North America. Thank you to SB2N, Kia Motors and YGG for a day we will never forget.

There are four YGG shows in L.A. at the Nokia Theater L.A. Live between November 26-27, 2010.  To purchase tickets visit www.yogabbagabbalive.com and for complete tour information.

Highlighting a Habitat Family

Habitat for Humanity's mission is to eliminate substandard Perez familyhousing.  Maricela is an example of a hardworking mother who needs a hand up, not a hand out.  She and her two children have been living in deplorable conditions. Their home is an unconverted garage, with no running water and no bathroom.   While she can use the restroom in the main house, it is limited to only certain hours of the day. Can you imagine your five year old daughter not being able to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night?

Maricela has always been determined to make a better life for her family.  In addition to working as a Teacher's Assistance she is now studying to become a preschool teacher.  She also volunteers with numerous organizations in her community and believes strongly in giving back.

Thanks to the dedication and passion of individuals like you, she and her family may be moving into her new home as early as December 2010.  Congratulations, Maricela, Dayan and Gustavo!  We'd like to offer our sincere gratitude to the many donors and volunteers who are making their dream of homeownership a reality.  Your efforts are truly making a difference in the Greater Los Angeles community.

Delta Employees on Day 1

Delta Air Lines kicked off a partnership with Habitat for Humanity the week of September 7th with a goal to build affordable homes in seven cities across the country.  Locally, employees from Delta Air Lines Los Angeles are working on a major home rehabilitation in Long Beach for a new Habitat Partner family.

On Wednesday, September 22, Delta executives from Atlanta and Los Angeles, including Tim Mapes, Sr. Vice President of Delta Air Lines, joined by a crew of 30 Delta volunteers to make a significant impact in the home's progress.  In addition to building with HFH GLA in Long Beach, Delta Air Lines employees have also landed at build sites in Atlanta, Boston, Cincinnati, Memphis, Minneapolis - St. Paul and New York City.

The six-week blitz build is expected to be finished in November.
