Youth Make a Difference
Act! Speak! Build!
Students and young people throughout Greater Los Angeles advocated for affordable housing and raised awareness for Habitat for Humanity during Act! Speak! Build! Week (ASBW) March 8 - 13. More than 25 groups from kindergarten to college students, held youth-led advocacy activities ranging from sharing affordable housing statistics with friends to sending letters to President Obama. Youth also participated in a YouTube contest, sharing what they did during ASBW. Prizes including a Unique Lakers Experience, DVDs, video games and museum tickets were awarded to the top three entries.
First Prize went to Ms. Genovese's Kindergarten Class, Notre Dame Academy, Second Prize went to Bay Harbor Hockey Red Wings (Middle School Age) and Third Prize went to Youth Leadership Long Beach/Andy Street Youth Ambassadors (High School Age). Congratulations to all our entry's and winners. You can view the winning videos at www.habitatla.org/act_speak_build.asp.
Make Your Change Count!
Nickels for Nails, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles' (HFH GLA) youth fundraising campaign, will take place April 18 - May 15. Help sponsor the House that Youth Built at our Imperial Highway site. This year, Nickels for Nails is going green! Youth are encouraged to recycle large water and soda bottles or other containers to use for the collection of funds. All participants will receive a Nickels for Nails sticker for their container and will be given fundraising tips to create a successful campaign. We also have an online donation site. Schools, organizations, classrooms and individuals are able to set up their own page and ask others to donate on their behalf. The group that raises the most money during the campaign will win prizes including a special build day for those who are 16 years and older.
Nickels for Nails sign-ups began March 20th. Please visit www.habitatla.org/nickels_for_nails.asp for more information or contact Melissa Killian, Youth Programs Coordinator at youthprograms@habitatla.org to sign-up. |

A New HFH GLA ReStore is Coming Soon
Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles is excited to announce our second ReStore® in the City of Norwalk, CA. In June 2010, homeowners and donors alike will have access to this 29,000 square-foot store which will be similar to our existing Home Improvement Store in Gardena, CA. The ReStore® in Norwalk will sell new and gently-used items at a substantial discount to the public, saving hundreds of thousands of pounds of debris from going into our area landfills. 100% of the profits of both stores go toward building more affordable housing for hard-working, low-income families. The Norwalk ReStore® will also be the 700th Habitat for Humanity ReStore® in the nation.
The new store is located at 11029 Alondra Blvd, Norwalk, CA, 90650, across the street from Cerritos College.
Donate to the Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles ReStore® (HFH GLA) first! Call Nicki Cordero to coordinate a pick up or drop off at 310-323-4663, ext. 127.
