Greetings!

This Saturday we hope to see you at our both at the SoCo Farmer's Market located in Costa Mesa at the South Coast Collection Retail Center just off the 405 at Harbor Blvd.  Head north on Harbor and make the first left onto South Coast Drive.  Turn right onto Hyland and left into the parking lot.  The address is 3315 Hyland Avenue, Costa Mesa 92626.  The market is open from 9am-2pm.

The idealistic manager of SoCo Farmers Market want's this to be a true certified farmer's market.  This means that all of the produce being sold is actually grown by the vendor.  The manager has suggested that we only sell what we grow or make.  Although we grow virtually all of our plants in 1-gallon size and larger, I don't grow more than 10% of our succulents or bedding plants, we don't make the pots, hats, or other garden supplies we normally sell.  I'll bring everything and find out how much we are allowed to display.  We will have a good supply of our potting soils on hand.

This is a relatively small, new farmer's market that has some excellent vendors but has room for a lot more.  (Most other farmer's markets don't have openings this time of year.  Several other farmer's markets that we have applied to have told us they are "full" and to reapply in a year.)  This Saturday they are supposed be having an extra large number of food trucks and a special event called "Farm to Food Truck Challenge".  Local chefs are invited to create dishes inspired by the fresh produce at the farmer's market.

With summer well under way the Gardenia plants are looking better and better.
Gardenia mystery

Mystery Gardenia  1 gallon $10, 5 gallon $25

This is an old favorite.  Big, full, flat flowers 3"-5" across with great fragrance.  Main bloom season is mid-spring through summer.  Large, glossy leaves on arching branches forms a shrub about 5'+ tall and wide.

Gardenia aimee

Aimee Gardenia 1 gallon $12, 2 gallon $20

This may be the most exciting cultivar available.  The high-centered, white flowers can reach 3"-5" across with great fragrance.  Main bloom season is mid-spring through summer.  The large, sometimes very large, leaves are slightly quilted on upright branches forms a shrub 6'+ tall and 5' wide.  The breeder named this Gardenia after their daughter Aimee Yoshioka.  It is also known as First Love.

Bedding Plants

Back in stock are Heliotrope Fragrant Delight, Shasta Daisy, and Phoenix Penstemon.  All are available in quart size.

Tomato plants

You can plant tomatoes up until early September and still expect a good crop.  IRight now in early summer, you can plant pretty much any variety.  Later the beefsteak types should be avoided as they require the longest period (3 months) of mild weather to get a crop.  Our suppliers finally had a few favorites available.  In stock this week are Black Cherry (self explanatory), Lemon Boy (large golden), Momotaro (medium red), Better Boy (large red), Paul Robeson (large burgundy), Sweet Baby Girl (red cherry)

Herbs

Excellent selection of Basil, Chives, Mint, Parsley, Rosemary, Sage, Thyme and more.

Blueberries

1-gallon Misty and Sunshine Blue are back in stock along with an assortment of good size 2-gallon cultivars.

Grapes

Best selection and selling well

Flame (red seedless), Lakemont (white seedless), Suffolk Red (red seedless), Venus (black seedless)

Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Zinfandel

Fruit Trees

Excellent selection includes

Eugenia jambos

Rose Apple (Eugenia jambos, Syzygium jambos)  5 gallon  $30

From tropical Asia comes an evergreen tree that resembles a small, lush Eucalyptus and produces a large quantity of apricot-size fruit over a long season.  The hollow fruit is a crispy rind about 1/4" to 3/8" thick surrounding a large seed.  The flesh has the perfume and taste of a sweet rose.  The small, upright tree grows 15'-25' tall with glossy green, lance-shaped leaves on arching stems.  New growth is reddish.   Our trees should start production within 2 years.

Eugenia uniflora

Surinam Cherry  (Eugenia uniflora, Syzygium uniflora)  2 gallon $20

From South America comes this interesting, cherry-size fruit with a tangerine flavor.  The plant starts out as a bush with arching branches and eventually becomes an attractive small, evergreen tree with marble bark.   Surinam cherry produces two main crops per year, late spring and mid-fall, but mature trees may have some fruit at all times.  The fruit starts green, turns yellow and matures to orange, red and even purple.  Many plants have all colors present at the same time.  The flowers are cream puffs.  Our trees should start production within 2 years.
