Greetings!
You have to admire...that 1-hour storm we had last Sunday became a historical event in the Midwest and Eastern states.
I hope most of you live on the hills or Orange County. Recently the climatologists have been warning about the possibility of huge floods in California. Apparently in 1861-1862, before official records were kept, a monster weather system hit and dropped rain constantly for nearly a month. Local records show that it rained 50-60 inches that season and much of Orange County was an inland sea. Officials estimated that at its peak there was about 300,000 cubic feet of water flowing down the Santa Ana River per second. (Flow rates of the Mississippi range from 200,000 cf/s to 700,000 cf/s.) In fact, it was noted that for many weeks the Los Angeles River, the San Gabriel River and the Santa Ana River were all one river as the basin was essentially underwater. (That same year the Central Valley was also a 300 mile long lake and Sacramento was under water for 3 months.) Apparently, none of our current flood control infrastructure can handle an event of that magnitude. Local sediment records suggest that monster events happen roughly every 200 years, so we are due sometime within this current century. When it happens I'm sure someone will blame global warming.
Back to the present.
It sure looks like spring! In my own garden the plums, pluots, nectarines, peaches and some of my apples are starting to bloom. It appears that we received well over 300 chill hours this winter. I'm still optimistic that my apricots and cherries will bloom.
