Tomatoes, Peppers & Herbs...Oh My!

Greetings!
When virtually all of the other states are suffering through cold and blizzards that leaves us with unusually mild conditions. Last year we never had a spring. There were no dry warm spells until the 4th of July. Perhaps this year we'll be compensated with 5 months of spring. The weather is so mild that you may want to chance planting your tomatoes and peppers now. By doing so you'll risk a few dollars for a really early harvest. Nancy and I took another trip through northern San Diego county and visited several succulent growers. If you like succulents, you'll love our selection. We will have a few bare root fruit trees available this weekend. I'm still trying to get more. This week Burgundy and Satsuma plum, Granny Smith and Pink Lady apple, a persimmon, and more. Next week we should be getting Red Baron peach, Anna apple, pomegranate and more. Bare root strawberries are available along with some stackable pots and plenty of ACID MIX potting soil. |
Tomatoes
If you are going to chance early success, it might as well be a great variety. We have a few of each of the following:
Ananas Noire, Black Cherry, Black Zebra, Cherokee Purple, Grape, Lemon Boy, Momotaro, and Sungold.
Peppers
Pepper plants can tolerate cooler conditions than tomatoes so are not as risky. We have a few sweet peppers:
Mini Chocolate Bell, Mini Red Bell, Mini Yellow Bell, Multicolored Roumanian Rainbow
A few chilli peppers:
Anaheim, Chile de Arbol, Holy Mole, Ring of Fire
If we have cold nights (below 45 degress) you'll need to cover the plants at night. Just about anything works, but if you use something opaque you'll need to uncover the plant in the morning. Our soil is warm enough, so you just have to keep the cold night air away. If you grow it in a pot, you can bring it inside at night.
