Greetings!
Happy Holidays! For most of us, we are getting ready to start our base work for 2010. Base work is the foundation to your fitness from which we can progress our training for the rest of the season. As you grow your aerobic base again, it is also a great time to work on your economy. Efficiency of movement is an integral part of training, yet as athletes, we tend to just consider those workouts that build our aerobic and anaerobic capapcity. How do you build economy? Drills, drills, drills! Efficiency of movment comes from naturally from just doing your sport, however, drills help us to break down skills and teach our neuro-muscular system to adapt to the most efficient pathway. So as you build your volume, think about working in swim drills, run drills, and cycling drills. Adding in drills will also keep your winter workouts fun and challenging.
Keep on moving forward!
Sincerely, Dr. Rick and Gail Kattouf

"Rx Nutrition" DVD Coming Soon!
Dr. Rick Kattouf has lectured all over the country on nutrition and training. Recently, Rick was approached to develop a DVD series on nutrition for life, fitness, and sport. This December, the filming and production begins. With so many people coast to coast and worldwide looking for solid nutrition information, Rx Nutrition will deliver just that!
The premise of Rx Nutrition is understanding the difference between what is healthy eating and what is right for you. Currently, the nutrition market is chock full of conflicting information so that it is challenging to weed out the necessary information. For the athlete, nutrition needs are much different from those who are sedentary, yet far too often we adopt inappropriate beliefs and behaviors about food based on the ever changing research findings amplified by the media.
For those of you who have seen Dr. Kattouf lecture, you know that the experience is always entertaining, interactive, and educational! Get ready for Rx Nutrition!

MarineCorpsMarathon

Far to often we hear, "I got to mile 20 and blew up..." from people describing both their first and even their 100th marathon. It takes a lot of confidence to control your race so that the last half isn't a death march. MeetChris Giordanelli, a mild manner, and extremely talented multi-sport athlete...
Chris came from a cycling background where he raced Cat I for many years; over the last several years he has developed into the Top Master's Duathlete in the US and has evolved into quite an accomplished runner. No easy task for many cyclists. Chris' official season ended at the Duathlon World Championships where he dominated the Master's race. However, it was the Marine Corps Marathon in October where he stepped out of his comfort zone and tried something a little different. His goal that race day was to run 2:50 or better; he ran 2:43 and qualified for the US Master's Marathon Championships at Twin City Marathon 2010. To learn how he did this be sure to read his race report.

Beach 2 Battleship Full and 1/2 Iron Distances Races

Jim Agostini, Columbia, SC
For those of you looking to race a full or half iron distance race in 2010 consider Beach 2 Battleship in Wilmington, North Carolina. This event is first class and kudos should be given to Race Director, Jeremy Davis, and his Setup Event staff for putting on an event of this size.
TeamKattouf was well represented at B2B. Jim Agostini, 45, a regular on the SC triathlon racing circuit and a dominating figure in the water had a fantastic first irondistance event. Without a hitch to his plan, he finished in 11:45.
In the half iron-distance event, Gail Kattouf won the women's title and was 5th overall in a time of 4:31, a new course record and PR at this distance. Ashley Long of Greenville, SC was 3rd overall female in 4:49, also PR at this distance. You can check out results at Setup Events.
No doubt, both Ashley and Gail raced a lot of races this past year and B2B was the icing on the cake to the end of a very productive and successful race season! Both athletes, had only one other half iron-distance race under their belt this year.
Another rising triathlon star and uber swimmer, Cindy Marks of Raleigh, NC competed on a relay team and ran the 13.1 leg for her team.

Amy Javens Ironman 70.3 World Championships
Amy Javens, kindergarten teacher and mother of three girls, knows how to do her homework. Since Timberman (5:07) she set some lofty goals for Clearwater and no doubt all those hurling workouts paid off big! We watched her strength and endurance grow in the run, bike, and swim over the last few months. Amy finished 9th in her 35-39 age group and went 4:34!
After a good break, Amy and Coach K are looking forward to planning an exciting 2010 season.

Five Guys, Five States:
Ironman Arizona
Though Jim, Eric, Steve, Cole, and Jim never met before they all had IM Arizona on their schedule and WOW what a race it was!
Steve Thomas from Atlanta, GA raced to a brilliant 11:18. Did we mention Steve had a hip replacement in October 2007? Way to kick it Steve! Dr. Jim McCreight from Steamboat Springs, CO had a fantastic first IM and went 12:56. Nutrition client, Eric LaFontaine from Simpsonville, SC was on fire in his first IM where he hammered out the marathon and finished in 10:56! IM Veterans, Jim Favreau, from Brunswick, Maine had a solid finish in 15:49 and Cole Braun from Oconomowoc, Wisconsin was smooth and steady as he finished in 13:29.
Eric & Jackie LaFontaine, Simpsonville, SC
