Ahhh!  Can
we say compression?
At TKInc, we are all about compression socks.  Rarely, will you see us without them pulled up to our knees!  While the literature is still undecided about the benefits of these socks, we at TKInc find them invaluable.  They make our legs feel great!  In training and racing we wear them as well as throughout our workday.  We have noticed less calf soreness after workouts and certainly our legs feel less "loaded" after a long day of work.   We have tried many compression socks and we are fans of the CEP Compression Socks , however, any brand that supplied 20-30 mmHg of comression are worth trying.  For special pricing and ordering of the CEP Compression Socks give us a call (864) 382-8486, we'll be glad to get them for you!

Needless to say, George has his tennis game down and took the title; beating fellow teammate (Team High Road), professional cyclist Craig Lewis.

Fueling the Female Athlete

On December 10, Rick and Gail hosted a womens only nutrition seminar at their home in Greenville, South Carolina.  The evening drew 40 local female endurance athletes and became a great opportunity for women to interact, get to know similar others, and gain some applicable nutrition information.

Larkin's on the River catered the gathering with their Healthy Fare Menu items designed by Dr. Rick Kattouf.  Rick spoke about nutrition and the power it has on our lives and our sport.  The Kattouf's look forward to hosting more sessions geared toward improving our training, nutrition, body, and mind.
Stay tuned!

HEADSHOT
TeamKattouf Gives Back
This year TKInc tried a new approach to giving back. In years past, we would  give to a local charity we were passionate about supporting. This year, with the cost of gas and the sputtering economy, we wanted to give everyday folk a break and make their day through a random act of kindness. We set out to give ten gift cards, each worth $100, to the shoppers at our local grocery store, Publix.

This experience was interesting and at times more challenging than we ever thought. We had to lay down a lot of our own misguided sterotypes and judgments about the people we interact with in our community.  We went off the premise: Never judge a book by its cover.

We did not go in with a criteria for who would receive the giftcards. While the people we gave the gift card to were ultimately very thankful, most people iniitially met us with apprehension. A sign to us that simple acts of giving are not a common occurence!

For those who really needed it and to those who may not have had the need at that moment, hopefully they all will remember this act and will pay it forward in their own way.

So whether it is a donation of time or money to an organization or an individual/family, lets all try to keep the spirit of giving alive even in tough economic times.  Thank you for making 2008 a great year!  We look forward to 2009 with much anticipation and excitement!

Peace and Health Always,

Rick and Gail Kattouf

Amazing Athlete Feats: Recap 2008
In our last newsletter we covered some great athlete achievements in long distance triathlons, in this newsletter we'd like to share more amazing athlete achievements from 2008.  May these stories give you inspiration for an active and healthy 2009!

Swimming
Superfit Julie Murphy (40-44) from Greer, South Carolina is one of our highlighted nutrition athletes this issue because what she has accomplished in the water is quite impressive.  This former collegiate swimmer turned triathlete got back to her competitve swim side this spring and summer by swimming a long way to two very prestigious titles.  She started out by winning the 40-44 AG in the
U.S. Master's Swimming 10K National Championship in 2:32.34.  This time placed her 2nd overall.  In June, she took it a little farther when she swam in the Florida Keys Community College Swim Around Key West.  She pulled and kicked for 12.5 miles to win her 40-44 Age Group in a time of 4:53!  So you thought nutrition was hard enough to plan and execute on dry ground?

Cycling
"The Assualt on Mt. Mitchell" is a well known and highly revered cycling experience here in the beautiful Carolinas.  It cover 102 miles and over 11,000 feet of climbing as riders make their way to the top the highest peak on the eastern seaboard, Mt. Mitchell. This year riders took to the roads in near 80 degree temps at the 7:30 am start, the day was an ominous one and temps soared to 103 degrees around noon.  As we waited at the main stop in Marion (mile 75) for riders to refuel and rest, we witnessed the toll the heat was having on these athletes.  Check out the TKI riders who made the journey to Marion and those who ascended to the top...

"Team 705" was a small pack of TKInc athletes made up of ultradistance runner, Janis Anderson and avid cyclists Jimmy Fitzharris and Ron Bryson who made their way cautiously to the top and found that they had strength in numbers.

Father of three young boys and extremely talented rider Clark Gallivan of Greenville looking for a fast time peeled by us in Marion and made it to the top in 6:37.

While the pair of 59 year old gents, Randall Maddox (7:07.50) and Ed McAlister (7:09.56) respectively (these guys also duked it out at the SC State Road Race Championships) used their strength and power to churn it out the last 20 miles of climbing.

Former collegiate swimmer turned multisport athlete,  Jim Agostini (7:51.41) of Columbia, SC made a great first appearance as he paced himself to the mountain top while his wife Lindsey effortlessly pedaled 75 miles to Marion.

Christina Maddox (Randall's wife) made her first journey to Marion in great fashion.  Christina and Lindsay arrived with plenty of reserve to cheer the other riders on.

The conditions and the course in which these riders endured were simply infernal.
Congratualtions to those who for the first time rode to Marion and to those who made it to the peak!  It was a wild ride!

Running
Shane Meredith of Richmond, IN ran a 50 Mile UltraMarathon in Texax, as well as the prestigious Mohican 100 mile UltraMarathon.

The Mother Road II
November 2008, Janis Anderson of Greenville, South Carolina took the long route and covered 100 Miles of road from Elk City to Ft. Reno, Oklahoma which placed her 5th OA Female and 2nd in her 55-59 Age Group.  This is just one of her many ultradistance accomplishments!

Kiawah Marathon
First time marathoner and multisport athlete, Dr. James Loging, battled a virus in the days leading up to Kiawah Island Marathon.  Not knowing how he would feel during the race, James took it out conservatively the first half and was able to crank out a fantastic 3:06 which qualified him for Boston!  Way to go James!!!

Tim Wilson, PR'd at the Kiawah Island Half Marathon, 1:39:46, 45-49AG; way to go Tim. The marathon is next, sub-4hrs!!

Great Lakes Multisport & Running Expo January 31 - February 1, 2009 to raise money for RACC.

RACC [Racers Against Childhood Cancer]

Mission::To use the passion and competitive spirit of Racers to raise money for research and the fight to defeat childhood cancer.

is a new charitable organization - founded on September 9th, 2007 by TKInc athlete Cole Braun and Jon McGlocklin - that is committed to raising money to defeat childhood cancer.

Dr. Rick Kattouf II will be a Keynote speaker. Other guest speakers include some familiar faces including: Olympic Marathoner, Ryan Hall; Olympic runner Frank Shorter; Professional marathoner Josh Cox; Troy Jacobsen; multisport coach and creator of Spinervals; Dick Hoyt, "The Ultimate Triathlete; and former US Postall Cyclist, Robbie Ventura.

It is through passion and selflessness that RACC seeks to leverage toward the fight against pediatric cancer. Racers understand and support the 'good fight' - by both their nature and training; and many already have great experience with fund-raising and sponsorship, wishing to do something that can make a real difference for a cause in which they believe when they make their beyond-human efforts.

With this vision, passion, and experience, the RACC founders and all their supporters now set out on the mission of making childhood cancer a condition that becomes just a distant memory to its survivors. Because everyone should have the opportunity to say:

WE RACE.
For Kids Who CAN'T.
