Minimalist Running: What Is It?
|
It's an idea that has always had a few eager and largely-ignored enthusiasts, but when Chris McDougall published Born to Run in 2009, he started a trend that may forever change the sport of running.
Born to Run is the story of the ultramarathoners of Mexico's Tarahumara's Indian tribe that defy every convention regarding the sport of running - and they do it all wearing sandals.
With that book, the minimalist running movement was born, and it's been gaining steam ever since. Minimalism in the running world basically says that our gait cycle looks a lot different when we take our shoes off, and that that form naturally and better protects the body from the stresses of distance running.
It's a debatable claim, but to some extent or another, it's true. When you run with less protection under foot, your gait cycle flattens out, reducing the force with which the heel and forefoot strike the ground. Researchers have observed two very interesting effects to this more natural form: Increased performance and reduced instances of injury.
But it's not that simple. Runners shouldn't necessarily abandon their thick-soled stability shoes and start emulating the Tarahumara. First of all, minimalist running simply isn't for everyone. Some folks will always require the extra shock absorbancy and stability features of the now-traditional running shoe, and there's nothing wrong with that. Secondly, the switch to a more minimal shoe should be phased-in and experimented with before you count yourself among the converted.
If you've been running with normal running shoes, you risk serious injury if you jump too fast into the minimalist realm because your new gait cycle requires different muscles to be developed. Proper phasing-in allows these muscles to gain strength and protect your tendons, ligaments, and skeleton from injury.
New Balance has recently entered the minimalist world with the Minimus. Sport science researchers have observed that there is an elusive "sweet spot" along the foot protection continuum, where the right balance can be struck between foot protection and shoe pliability. New Balance has found that sweet spot with Minimus.
You can try a pair on anytime in our store, and consult with one of our Certified Fit Specialist regarding minimalist running. |

Right now, our shelves are loaded with New Balance's classic designs. New this year to the line-up is the old 999. The 999 was one of the most-successful interpretations of New Balance's 990 series (the best selling running shoes - ever). |
