Greetings!

2010 dianeThe Olympic torch has been extinguished and the athletes are returning to their homes and countries.  In comparison, a choice few will travel home with the coveted gold!  All will return home with experiences that have forever altered their lives!

Did you know that in just 15 days there will be another Olympic games?  Most of us of are unaware of the significance of these games.  The games are the Paralympic Games of 2012.  Paralympic games is a multi-sporting event where the athletes who compete have some form of physical disability.   This is the Paralympics 14th year and London is hard at work resetting the stages of competition for the opening ceremonies.   There are 165 countries represented and 4200 participants will compete in 21 different sporting venues!  Amazing!  Check out their website at
London Paralympics!

When I think of the determination and discipline that each of these athletes must possess to prepare for their sport it humbles me.  As I watched the Olympics on television I was moved many times to compare the athlete competing
and my Christian life.  Do I have that kind of determination and discipline?  Does the Church exhibit this kind of determination and discipline? - We focus on Hebrews 12 today -  would that you and I would do what is necessary to finish the race well!  Unlike the "choice few" mentioned in the first paragraph - we all win Gold!  Run well my sisters!   Run Determined!  Do whatever we need to do to be disciplined and most of all look to the witnesses that have gone before us - WE CAN DO THIS - in the power of the Holy Spirit! Keep your eyes on Jesus the author and perfecter of our FAITH!  No matter where you find yourself today may you be renewed to run DETERMINED and DISCIPLINED!

Keep posting! It's a beautiful thing to see you supporting one another in the Forums and Devotionals!  There are two more great prizes in the coming weeks!  A new iPad and a couples cruise!!!!!

Praying for each of you!

Run Determined and Disciplined!

Melanie Morgan

We had already been climbing these stairs for 15 minutes and there was so many more to go! We were at Montmorency Falls in Quebec, one of the tallest water falls in North America, and we were climbing the most enormous set of stairs I have ever seen! We kept pausing to rest and get our breath, but even so, I thought I would NOT make it to the top! I wanted to stop and just walk back down. But it would be so worth it to see the view from the top  and walk across the top of the falls! So, I slowed my pace, rested periodically, then set my course for the TOP! The destination, the prize, would be worth the climb!

In life there are times when I lose sight of the prize, when I want to give up. But in scripture there is encouragement to persevere in running with determination and discipline.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Hebrew 12:1-2a

I begin by setting my goal:

Be aware of the prize!

The prize is knowing and walking with Jesus who gave us our faith and keeps us growing in it.

Run with Endurance

  • Throw off sin that entangles

My sins that entangle are not things like stealing or murder. They are things like fear, lack of faith, comparison, and pride. These are deadly because they're often unseen. They're in my heart and they affect my race with God. They are like trying to run a race with heavy wrist and ankle weights. They slow me down so that I'm not moving forward, not learning new ways to trust, God, not stepping out in faith to take on challenges that He sets before me.

Run the race God has set before us

  • Don't give up!

The tree had to come down. It was dead and too close to the house. A good wind storm could knock it right onto the house. So we began sawing, chopping, and all the while pulling in the opposite direction of the house. The process took way longer than we expected it to. Every time we thought the tree would fall, it didn't! So we went back to sawing some more, and we enlisted even more people to pull! Meanwhile we were being eaten by mosquitoes and were drenched with sweat! Just as we thought this tree would NEVER come down, we shouted "Timber!" and down it came. Not in the direction we wanted, but thankfully not on the house.

In our spiritual lives, though we work hard and progress takes a long time, we must keep "sawing".  We must untangle our lives from the sins that keep us from hearing and listening to God's voice.  We must seek to keep listening, to keep asking and to keep living in right relationship with Him and with others.

Accept discipline

And have you forgotten the encouraging words God spoke to you as his children?

He said, "My child, don't make light of the Lord's discipline and don't give up when he corrects you.
For the Lord disciplines those he loves and he punishes each one he accepts as his child."
Hebrews 12:5-7

  • Don't ignore God's discipline

No athlete can compete well without disciplining his body. All of us need exercise, and that takes discipline. In my fitness class I am, mostly, motivated to work hard and do my best, to run hard, to lift the heaviest weights I can. But I get tired, and I want to quit! It takes discipline to keep on going. In my spiritual life I am motivated to read the Bible, to spend devotional time with God, to attend Bible study, to read books that will help me grow. But I get distracted, busy, tired and I move away from the discipline of time with the Lord. I begin to miss that time with Him so I discipline myself to get back into the habit of listening to God's voice through devotions, Bible study and prayer.

  • God disciplines those he loves!

When God sends his discipline into to our lives he is treating us as his own child! God has moved my family several times - to vastly different areas of North America. He has taught us through the struggle of adapting to a different culture, meeting new people, living far away from our children and family. He has taught us to depend on him when we feel like a fish out of water. He has taught us not to depend on the comfort and security of what is around us, but to place our confidence in Him! Discipline is not fun while it lasts, but afterwards there is a quiet harvest of living within his presence, confident in following his will. It's the best place to be! As you endure this divine discipline, remember that God is treating you as his own children.

Stand Firm - on your shaky legs!

So take a new grip with your tired hands and stand firm on your shaky legs. Mark out a straight path for your feet. Hebrews 12:12-13a

As I throw off sins that weight me down and learn to persevere in His strength, as I learn through the discipline he allows in my life, then I can do this! I can grab on again, with my weakened, tired hands. I can take new steps, shaky though they may be, along a straight path of walking with God. I am weaker in ME and stronger in HIM!

Meet me in the forum or devotionals to discuss determination and discipline.  What is an area that you need accountability?  Let's get honest with one another so that we can persevere in the race!

See you in the forums, Melanie

Thin Within: Rebuilding God's Temple

Kim Weaver

Thin Within: Rebuilding God's Temple is a faith-based weight loss Bible study developed by Judy Wardell Halliday, the author of the book Thin Within: A Grace-Oriented Approach to Lasting Weight Loss.

This approach is a "non-diet" that involves no calorie, fat, or carbohydrate counting....no weighing or measuring your food. There are no "special foods or drinks" that you are required to eat and no exercise required for the purpose of weight loss. In fact, it takes the focus off the food and places it on a close, intimate relationship with the loving Father who created us with the natural signals of hunger and satisfaction.

I began practicing this approach to weight loss after a lifetime of battling my weight. I had been a "yo-yo" dieter for all of my teen and adult life. I had sought after almost every "expert" in the field of dieting and exercise - except proponents of surgery. I was frustrated, angry at myself for not being able to fix this problem in my life. But the real problem was that I had neglected to seek God for the solution to my overeating. God opened my eyes to Colossians 2:20-23 which says, "Since you died with Christ to the basic principles of this world, why, as though you still belonged to it, do you submit to its rules: 'Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!'? These are all destined to perish with use, because they are based on human commands and teachings. Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence." That was my problem....sensual indulgence! Only God could take care of that sin in my life!

I discovered a Bible study that was being promoted in churches that taught an amazing method of weight loss....eat regular foods and still lose weight by listening to God's signals. I began a class in my church and was excited to see the miraculous things God was doing in my life. Then, Satan stepped in and began his destructive work. It was revealed that this particular Bible study was not scripturally sound in its doctrine. I could no longer promote it! After much prayer over this thin within devastating turn of events, God brought the "Thin Within" book to my attention through a close friend. The methods for weight loss were exactly what I had been practicing already, and the book was right in line with what God teaches in His Holy Word.

I am excited once again to be leading a Bible study based on the God-given weight loss principles of hunger and satisfaction. God is working in my life and in the lives of those involved in the study to teach us to trust Him with every aspect of our lives, including our food issues. He is the one and only Creator and the Lover of my soul!

Instead of running to food for comfort and fulfillment, I am learning to run to Him and crawl up in His lap daily for every need. The closeness I am experiencing with the Lord is the number one benefit of the Thin Within Bible study....the weight loss is a huge bonus! God is amazing and loves us more than we could ever imagine! It is such a blessing to be able to lay our burdens at His feet and let Him carry us! Praise His Holy Name!
