What's your Soul Thirsting For?

I'll admit it; part of the reason why I love the holiday season is baked goods.  There is always something baking in my kitchen-pumpkin bread, pumpkin pancakes, or pumpkin cheesecake.  Last year, when the news reported a pumpkin shortage I rushed out and purchased every can of pumpkin I could find.

Don't misunderstand; I am no Paula Dean in the kitchen.  But, my baking skills have come a long way from the very first time I ever baked.  I was in the third grade, when I discovered my mom's microwave cookbook.

I convinced her to let me try the apple crisp. She helped me peel and cut the apples.  She laid out all the ingredients.  Then left me to stir everything together and put it in the microwave.  In the process, I confused the salt and sugar. They might be the same in color, but very different in taste! The apples were coated with cup salt and teaspoon sugar.

After dinner I eagerly served up dessert.  One bite and it was obvious something had gone dreadfully wrong.  In unison, we all reached for our water glasses. No one asked for seconds, but we all asked for more water.  No one's thirst could be quenched.

In Psalm 42:2 David says, "My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?"  David has a thirst for God that is unquenchable. His soul is eager to meet with God, to talk with Him, to spend time with Him.  David's desire for God is unstoppable.

For ministry wives, our lives are always busy.  Add the holiday season to an already busy schedule and things can get down right chaotic. Sometimes even less than enjoyable!

Don't let another ministry season pass while your thirst for God dwindles.  Give yourself permission to spend the necessary time cultivating a thirst for God.  Trust me, your husband had rather see you passionate about your walk with God than anything else.  When your soul thirsts for God, your husband, your children, and your church reap the rewards.

Just a couple of ideas:
Take a store bought pie to the Christmas party and spend the extra time talking to God.
Say 'no' to something in order to spend an afternoon at a local coffee shop or bookstore reading the Bible or a book that inspires you.
Redeem the minutes in your day.  Talk to God while doing your hair, putting on your make-up, or after dropping the kids off at school. Pray while you run errands.  Ask God to give you a desire for the things He deems important.

Whatever you do this Christmas Season; make sure your soul is thirsty for God!
