Hearty Girls, Healthy Women Training Opportunity

This year, we will be partnering with Chatham University to bring interested individuals and organizations an exciting training opportunity through Hardy Girls Healthy Women (HGHW). A nonprofit organization dedicated to the health and well being of girls and women, Hardy Girls Healthy Women's vision is that all girls and women experience equality, independence, and safety in their everyday lives. To that end, they advance their mission by creating opportunities, developing programs, and providing services using the latest research in girls' development.

Starting this month, we are inviting interested organizations to partner with us for the opportunity to benefit from a HGHW training series and programming materials.

Partners will benefit from:

  • Eight training sessions on various aspects of the HGHW work.  Fall sessions will take place on October 4 and 18, and November 8 and 29, from 4:00pm - 6:30pm.  Topics will include, "SPARKing Girls Activism and Change" and "Moving Beyond Mean Girls: Building Girls' Coalition Groups." Spring session dates are TBA.
  • The ability to send up to three people to each training.
  • One copy each of from Adversaries to Allies: A Curriculum for Change and A Facilitator's Guide to Becoming a Muse (one set per organization).
  • Access to additional Hardy Girls Healthy Women training opportunities in the Pittsburgh community.

Interested in participating in this training opportunity as a partner organization? Here's how:

  • Submit a one-page letter of interest indicating why you are interested in the program, what you hope to gain from the trainings, and how (if known) you might use the information gained in their current or future work.
  • Commit to attend at least three of the four fall and spring sessions (a total of at least six of the eight).
  • Be a Girls Coalition member in good standing (individuals are welcome to join in order to take advantage of the partnership).  Members status or materials can be requested by email info@girlscoalitionswpa.org
Letters of interest can be submitted to Heather Mediate via email at heather@girlscoalitionswpa.org .

Are We Missing the Boat? Strengthening Teen Pregnancy Prevention, Adolescent Sexual Health, and Youth Empowerment by Effectively Addressing Relationship Violence
This program is designed for program directors and direct service staff who work with adolescents (both young women and young men). It will provide a framework that is new to southwestern Pennsylvania, but has proven effective in other regions.
  • How would our work with adolescents change if we admit that many teen pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections are the result of sex that girls didn't want to have in the first place?
  • What if we learn that standard domestic violence screening questions aren't as effective in starting conversations with adolescents?
  • Would you be willing to change the standard language your program uses if there was a better way to invite frank conversation (with both young women and young men) about coercion in their relationships?

Chatham University - Andrea James Speaking in Honor of GLBTIQ Awareness Month

Transgender writer, director, producer, and activist Andrea James will speak in celebration of GLBTIQ (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, and Queer) Awareness Month.  James will discuss her perspective on the need to improve the relationship between the feminist movement and the trans community through the media.  The discussion will also consider the ways in which greater gender roles are reinforced to the extent that they seem "natural" to many people and the way in which this institutionalized sexism affects us all.  She will also discuss using the media for social justice purposes by discussing the reasoning and techniques employed in some of her own media messaging.
