Dear ,

First of all, in case we haven't done so already, we would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended, participated in, and helped organize our Fourth Annual Conference! The day was a great success, filled with wonderful presentations, meaningful conversations, and connections.  We couldn't have pulled it off without the help and support of our committed members and active volunteers.  Again, THANK YOU!

This month is filled with amazing opportunities to support and advocate for girl-serving organizations throughout southwestern PA, as well as events to help improve your own programming and make connections with organizations and individuals who are empowering girls every day!

Sincerely,

Advancing Childhood Success by Reducing Chronic Absence

Information recently released by Attendance Works point to the impact of chronic early absence on later student's success. While recent reports indicate that truancy is a risk factor that affects children through adolescence, the teenage years and through adulthood, never has the evidence been so clear that chronic pre-school and kindergarten absences predict chronic absenteeism and poor academic performance in later grades.

Obviously, missing so much school is a problem for absent students: By 3rd grade, the children who missed too much of kindergarten and 1st grade are falling behind in reading, research shows. By 6th grade, chronic absence becomes an early-warning sign that students will drop out of high school.  With all this information, hopefully we are all beginning to realize that a reduction in absences starting in the early grades is one of the more straightforward, actionable steps to improve schools, improve student success, increase graduation rates and improve our community well-being overall!
