Even though the calendar says that spring is officially here, it sure feels like we've skipped right over to summer in southwestern PA! While there are some awesome events to look forward to in April, don't forget about the Girls Coalition Fourth Annual Conference - which is only DAYS away! Our line up of speakers and break-out sessions will provide dynamic conversation topics to consider as we continue serving girls throughout our region. You don't want to miss it. |

Fourth Annual Girls Coalition Conference Elevate the Conversation. Inspire Collaboration and Action.

8:30am - 4:00pm
In addition to providing follow-up to the 2011 focus on negotiation and the PROGRESS partnership, we are partnering with WQED and the Women and Girls Lead Project to use film and other media as a catalyst for discussing issues that are affecting girls today, as well as innovative ways to use media in girl-focused programming.
The event will feature two keynote speakers, (who will also sit on a panel together following lunch):
Additional breakout session topics will include:
- Entertainment Technology as a catalyst for girl specific programming
- Gender stereotypes, including discussion about women in athletics and topics related to power, strength, beauty and traditional notions of femininity
- How to effectively integrate data collection and analysis into programmatic decision-making
- Redefining Business & Beauty a discussion about the unique issues that impact African American girls related to health and wellness, education, and the intersection of race and gender
- Young women and the juvenile justice system
- Music, messaging, and more
The day will conclude with an intentional networking and dessert reception, where attendees are challenged to start conversations that will lead to active and productive collaborations throughout our region, as well as to develop next steps for the tools and resources they have received throughout the day. Full versions of films used during the sessions also will be showing during this time.

The Midwife Center for Birth and Women's Health - 30th Anniversary Sponsorship Opportunities
This year, The Midwife Center will celebrate 30 years as the only licensed and freestanding birth center in our region. In celebration of this milestone, as well as in preparation for helping a greater number of women who will come to the center for wellness and pregnancy care, consider becoming a 30th Anniversary Sponsor to help TMC grow. Union Project - Monster Spring Open House
Celebrate the warmth of spring and discover the awesome things happening on the East End at the Union Project Monster Open House. Join the folks at UP for a full day of free family-friendly, monster themed community building activities including a ceramic showcase, zumba and yoga sampler classes, a monster fashion show, and a family dance party!

Strong Women, Strong Girls - Jump into Spring Events
Jump into Spring! is a free community event celebrating the 400 plus Pittsburgh area elementary school girls SWSG serves, their families, college mentors and our community partners. You won't want to miss the festivities- which include lots of giggling and jumping rope, visits from special guests from the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Pittsburgh Passion, inspiring words from young adult author Sharon Flake (http://www.sharongflake.com/), musical entertainment, physical engagement and more!  Kelly Strayhorn Theater - Speaq A co-production of Dreams of Hope and the Kelly Strayhorn, Speaq has traditionally been an online-only space for queer and allied young people to log in and explore their worlds through a poetry medium. Now on the hunt for new talented leadership to build both a physical and online community of young poets and spoken word artists, the speaq workshops seek to find youth interested in sharing their art with each other, the world, and speaq their minds. This free, monthly series of poetry and spoken word workshops and performance events for queer youth in the Pittsburgh area will be an opportunity to hone in young people's craft, while building a supportive community of art. The Women and Girls Foundation -- GirlGov Program - Calling for Applications NOW! The Women and Girls Foundation's Third Annual GirlGov program will be held this summer from June 16th through 19th. GirlGov, created by teen women for teen women, is designed to provide local girls with the opportunity to learn, first hand, about government and social change philanthropy. Participants will shadow a state legislator for the day and learn about current public policy issues impacting women's and girls' lives in our region. All girls entering 9th to 12th grade in the Fall of 2012 and who live in Allegheny, Fayette, Greene, Washington and WEstmoreland Counties may apply. Past GirlGov participants may apply. Transportation, overnight accommodations, and meals are included - and there is NO fee to participate. DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS - MAY 15th, 2012

CORO Pittsburgh - Women in Leadership, Now Accepting Applications Women in Leadership (WIL) is a twelve-week, part-time, evening training program designed for high achieving women with demonstrated leadership experience in the private, public and non profit sectors. WIL is the only leadership training program in southwestern PA devoted specifically to women. The program offers the participant an opportunity to enhance personal leadership potential within a network of people dedicated to creating positive change for women in the region. 2012 Carnegie Mellon International Film Festival: Faces of Others - Whore's Glory film screening The 2012 Carnegie Mellon International Film Festival: Faces of Others will showcase 2011 German and Austrian documentary, Whores' Glory. This film is a cinematic triptych that explores the uncertain lives of prostitutes in Mexico, Bangladesh, and Thailand. Through colorful portraits of prostitutes and their clients, beautiful imagery, and emotional engagement, this enlightening documentary reveals the cultural, religious, and psychological dimensions of worlds where the most intimate act has become a commodity. Along with a live introduction from Germany via Skype with film director Michael Glawogger, this event will also feature an insightful question and answer session with Michael, moderated by Stephen Brockmann, Professor of German at Carnegie Mellon University. Included in the ticket price is also a reception with Indian dishes courtesy of India Garden and pizzas compliments of Pizza Romano.
