Dear ,

I am thankful for the Girls Coalition of SWPA.  True story.

As the calendar year wraps up, we have so many things great things going on.  There is no time like the present to get involved:
  • December 6, 2011, 8:30-10am--Making Gender a Non-Issue Breakfast at the Panera Bread on Centre Ave in Shadyside; Contact Kelsey or Rebecca for more details*
  • December 13, 2011, 8-10am--Meet & Greet with the Membership Committee at the Union Project--network with others who serve, support, and advocate for girls--Register Now (A conference committee meeting will start at 10am)*
  • March 28, 2012--Save the Date for the Fourth Annual Conference

*Please feel free to bring a canned good to the December 6 or 13 events. The Girls Coalition will be collecting canned goods to donate  through December 15 (and will donate them on December 16).

Finally, I haven't been able to put down some great reading material this month and I wanted to share, check out the 10th anniversary edition of The Freedom Writers, the much talked about Half the Sky, and the November issue of Marie Claire (with Katie Holmes on the cover).  Finally, visit our facebook page for the things we are reading and recommending on a daily basis!

Sincerely,

Heather Mediate, Program Director

YWCA Greater Pittsburgh Logo
The Stand Against Racism is the YWCA's national movement to bring people together from all walks of life - across the country - and raise awareness that racism still exists. The methodology of the Stand Against Racism is to bring together like-minded organizations that share in our vision of eliminating racism and celebrating the richness of diversity.

We invite groups of any size that are located within the geographic area of a Participating YWCA Association, to become a Participating Site by hosting a "Stand." (The YWCA Greater Pittsburgh is participating- most zip codes in the area are eligible. Feel free to call Mell Steven Cosnek at 412.255.1466 with any questions.)

We also invite individuals to look up Participating Sites in their community and come out to take a Stand Against Racism.

iTwixie Gaming!

Introducing iTwixie's first mobile game! Roly-Poly is the first ever, fun, STEM savvy mobile game that's for girls, by girls. Check it out...

Roly-Poly gives girls the chance to learn more about Roly-Poly bugs, ions and how these amazing crustaceans help detoxify the earth's soil. The game gives girls the chance to help the heroine, Roly-Poly, to take on big polluters by making our planet's soil healthy again. As she's successful, she climbs higher and higher, into the sky, to finally see a vibrant field of sunflowers, thriving in the sun. Who knew a little Roly-Poly bug could do all that?!?

tween trends

Here's what's trending on TweenTrends, powered by iTwixie.com:

In answer to "When I see pink stuff in stores,  I think"

- 10% said "Ew! Stuff for little girls"

- 20% said "I hate pink"

- 43% said "Huh, why is girl stuff always pink?"

- and get this, only 27% said "Cool! Stuff for me!"

73% of girls had a negative reaction to seeing "pink stuff in stores." And yet aren't the girl-sections of most stores plastered in pink?
