Dear ,

Well, another summer has come and gone, and if you are anything like me you were surprised by how fast it went and how busy you were from June through now.  The Girls Coalition has been busy too, planning and preparing for an exciting year. We are only as strong as the people we serve and that means you! So, more than anything, we want you to get involved in our work. Here are just a few opportunities:
  • Attend a screening of Tapestries of Hope and a panel discussion with the filmmaker, 2009 CNN Hero Betty Makoni; You can REGISTER NOW for this event hosted in partnership with WQED; a special Girls Coalition member rate is available--Members click here to register
  • Our partnership with PROGRESS is really moving, and this is the final call for organizations to partner!  The next train the trainer (for partners who have not yet attended one) is on September 27, 2011, from 9am -12:30pm. Partners can Register Now!
  • Join us for a Membership Meet & Greet on October 11, 2011 at the Bruegger's in Shadyside; these events are quickly becoming a favorite and you can Register Now!
I hope to see you soon and encourage you to think about how you, or your organization, might become more involved.

Sincerely,

Heather Mediate, Program Director

Tapestries of Hope

In partnership with WQED, the Girls Coalition is proud to present a film screening of Tapestries of Hope, followed by a discussion with filmmaker and 2009 CNN Hero, Betty Makoni (read an article about her work here).

This award-winning film by Michealene Cristini Risley exposes the myth, widely held in Africa, that raping a virgin cures a man of HIV.  It also details Makoni's struggles and triumphs in creating the Girl Child Network of shelters for abused girls in Zimbabwe.

Makoni, a survivor of rape at age six and orphaned at age nine, has built four Girls Empowerment Villages in Zimbabwe. These employ a unique model to provide shelter, healing, and a future to sexually abused girls. During filming of Makoni's work in Zimbabwe, filmmaker Risley and her aide were jailed but managed to flee the country with their film.

The film screening will be followed by a discussion featuring Makoni, her work, and the creation of the Girl Child Network. Moderated by WQED's Jennifer Stancil, the discussion also will feature local and regional experts on violence against women, including LaVerne Baker Hotep from the Center for Victims of Violent Crime.

When: September 23, 2011; 9am - 12pm

Where: WQED, 4802 Fifth Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15213

Cost: $20 non-member; $15 Girls Coalition Member
