The Girls Coalition is busy, busy, busy planning for our third annual conference, to be held on April 5, 2011, at the Doubletree Hotel in Monroeville, Pa.  

The event will feature keynote speaker Linda Babcock, founder and faculty director of the Program for Research and Outreach on Gender Equity in Society (PROGRESS) at Carnegie Mellon University and author of Women Don't Ask: Negotiation and the Gender Divide.

Workshops will focus on mentoring, advocacy, and entrepreneurship.  Attendees will be encouraged to mix, mingle, and meet their colleagues, while engaging in meaningful, hands on professional development.

Do you know a local woman who leads her company, board of directors, community or non-profit in a manner which inspires you? Nominate her for the Girls Coalition of Southwestern Pennsylvania Women Who Wow award! The Girls Coalition of SWPA seeks to highlight each month the amazing work women do to spark a greater confidence and ambition in girls. Award recipients will be featured in emails, newsletters and press coverage in southwestern PA, reaching over 100,000 people each month. All submissions are due by the 15th of the month.

 

We are currently accepting nominations. The criteria is simple:

  1. Identify a woman whose work inspires you in of the following fields: Technology, Finance, Education, Health Care, Science, Media, Non-Profit, Board of Directors, Athletics, Public Service.
  2. Tell us about this woman in 150 words or less. Consider how she exemplifies leadership, respect, fairness, caring and citizenship, and how she would be a worthy role model to be emulated by girls in the community.

We would be honored by your service as a Selection Day Judge for the 2011-2012 class of Coro Fellows in Public Affairs.  Coro Pittsburgh invites leaders from all sectors to join us as we create a diverse, creative group of national Fellows.

Coro seeks community leaders who appreciate and practice both the values and skills necessary for ethical and effective participation in public affairs.  Ultimately your input will help determine which of the 30 Selection Day candidates will participate in the Coro Fellowship across the country.

Community Cinema


WQED provides meaningful, insightful programming that addresses the pressing social issues of our region and our world. Our new Community Cinema program showcases outstanding documentaries
distributed by Independent Lens by hosting free screenings and expert panel discussions, right in our Oakland headquarters.

As part of our Women's Empowerment initiative, we're offering films devoted to women's issues in February, March, and April. Please join us for these events and explore some of the challenges facing women and girls, both at home and around the world.
