Dear ,

Welcome to the August 2010 Girls Coalition Newsletter! The long, lazy days of summer are drawing to an end and with fall just around the corner, the Girls Coalition is really ramping up--planning for our booth at the Pennsylvania Governor's Conference for Women, our late October event, and our 2011 conference.

Additionally, the Girls Coalition's Gender Equity Work Group is interested in learning about how your organization views Gender Equity in your region. The work group seeks to bring together girl-serving organizations - for profit and not-for-profit - to help promote Gender Equity in Southwestern Pennsylvania. It will be an incredible help to us if you could take about three minutes to participate in our survey. Just click here!

The work group will compile the results of this survey in order to raise awareness of this important issue, make connections amongst girl-serving agencies, and promote gender equity in our region.

Thank you so much for your participation in the Girls Coalition.  Do not hesitate to contact us at any time to learn more, get more involved, or share information, ideas, or issues that are effecting girls in our region.

Sincerely,

The Steering Committee

JWF is seeking to fund a signature program and will consider requests up to $25,000 for this endeavor.  Successful applicants will be eligible for multi-year funding. There is no guarantee that a signature grant will be made in 2010.  A project selected as a JWF Signature Grant is one that is closely aligned with the JWF mission to support innovative educational projects that will have demonstrable impact on the educational and economic advancement of women and girls in Allegheny County.  Other crucial factors include clearly defined outcomes, well-defined implementation strategies, plans for long-term sustainability and capacity for inter-agency collaboration to promote program goals.

Standard Grant Program

Standard Grant Program requests for 2010 should not exceed $7,500. Organizations will be considered for funding on a year-to-year basis.  Previous funding will not guarantee continued funding or prevent future funding.  The Foundation will entertain requests for renewal funding.

The International Violence against Women Act presents a comprehensive plan for US foreign assistance to prevent and remedy violence against women and girls. A structure would be created to support more coordinated and intensified local efforts in up to 20 countries to improve the full range of services that survivors need.  It would promote jobs and other economic support for women, and strengthen efforts to change social attitudes that condone violence against women.

The bill has important provisions for addressing violence against women during and after armed conflict.  It would support trauma counseling, medical assistance, legal services, and economic opportunity programs for women in countries affected by conflict.
