Girls Coalition Partners with PROGRESS

The Girls Coalition is very excited to announce that we are planning to partner with PROGRESS (Program for Research on Gender Equity in Society).  Girls and young women are not taught the negotiation skills that will allow them to ask for what they want or need throughout their lives, leading to increased gender inequity. Teaching young girls the skills they need to negotiate the decisions in their lives will empower them to take control of their health, well-being, education, financial security, and so much more. The Girls Coalition wants to take on the audacious goal of helping PROGRESS institutionalize their programs with girl-serving agencies, in the hope of impacting the future for a generation of girls in Southwestern Pennsylvania.

This partnership and the resulting initiatives will mark concrete ways in which the Girls Coalition is taking action to positively impact gender equity and economic empowerment for girls in our region: two goals that are the foundation for the Girls Coalition's strategic plan.  We are currently working on a plan that will allow us to successfully embark on this partnership with PROGRESS and we look forward to providing you with details as they become available.  Please do hesitate to contact us if you have any questions. We always value the feedback of our members and friends.

G(irls) 20 Summit

Before the mostly-male world leaders descend on Toronto for the G20 summit, 21 young women from around the world met for the G(irls) 20 summit to discuss global policy and offer a voice for 3.3 billion women worldwide. These girls--one representing the African Union and 20 mirroring the role of the G20 delegates-- sent their policy conclusions to the world leaders attending the G20 summit, hoping to have their voices heard.  For more info see: www.girlsandwomen.com.  A report is available at http://www1.voanews.com/english/news/americas/First-Ever-Girls-20-Summit-to-be-Held-in-Canada-96666889.html

Certificate Program for Private Sector Leaders at Georgetown University's Center for Juvenile Justice Reform

This is a weeklong program of intensive study for private sector leaders responsible for leading change in their organizations. The Certificate Program focuses on policies, programs and practices related to crossover youth (children and youth who are known to multiple systems of care, particularly juvenile justice and child welfare).

The purpose of the Certificate Program for Private Sector Leaders is to bring together current and future leaders in private organizations (service providers, foundations, academic institutions, advocacy organizations and others) to increase their knowledge about multi-system reform efforts related to crossover youth, improve the operation of their organizations in serving this population, provide an opportunity for the development of collaborative leadership skills, and create a mutually supportive network of individuals across the country committed to systems reform.

The program will take place from October 22-28, 2010 at Georgetown University in Washington, DC. The Certificate Program for Private Sector Leaders is designed for representatives from private organizations operating at the national, state, tribal or local levels that are interested in the delivery of services across systems of care. These organizations will range from direct service providers to foundations, academic institutions and advocacy groups. While each application will be reviewed on an individual basis, mini-teams comprised of individuals from the same organization are encouraged to apply.

Note, that if you work in the public sector or are a private agency that performs traditional government functions in the juvenile justice, child welfare or behavioral health systems, please apply for the Certificate Program for Public Sector Leaders (the application for the 2011 program will be posted in January 2011).

For more information on the Certificate Program, feel free to visit our website at http://cjjr.georgetown.edu and click on Certificate Programs. Applications are due by July 27, 2010. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact Kristina Rosinsky at klr45@georgetown.edu
