important programs and services that we offer to victims and to the community. Your

UCP Kids (Unique Community Programs for Kids) was thrilled
to see so many participants in our session "Empowering All Girls to Reach Their
Full Potential" at the 2nd Annual Girls Coalition Conference on Wednesday,
March 24, 2010. UCP Kids organized
a panel of four successful young women, all with varying types of
disabilities. The panelists shared
the importance of girl-serving programs including girls with disabilities seeing
that, given appropriate opportunities, these girls can accomplish so very much in
their lives. While each panel member had a different story to tell, a common
theme was present: support from family
and community was the key to their success. Many program leaders who attended the session were inspired
by the panelists to include girls with disabilities in their existing programs,
but are wondering how to successfully do that. UCP Kids' F.U.N. for Everyone program can help! In an effort to help community
organizations Fully Understand the Needs for Everyone, UCP Kids
conducts trainings and provides resources to educate the community on welcoming
and including children of all abilities in a variety of settings. UCP Kids' highly interactive trainings
can be customized based on the needs of the organization and are offered at NO
COST to organizations thanks to generous support from the Pennsylvania
Developmental Disabilities Council. Whether or not you attended the recent session at the Girls
Coalition conference, if you'd like to schedule a F.U.N. for Everyone training
for your organization on how to help ALL children have success within your
programs, call UCP Kids at 412-683-7100 ext. 2215.

Amazing Girl
|

Amazing Girl: Kristin In March, Kristin was crowned Ms. Wheelchair Pennsylvania (www.mswheelchairpenn.org) and is committed to using this
honor as a platform to reach out to other young people who have disabilities to
advocate for affordable and accessible housing. Kristin grew up in a small rural community and was the only
person she knew with a physical disability, but that never stopped her. Kristin credits her parents with being
positive, setting high expectations for her, and encouraging her to try
anything (from student government to Spanish club to a cheerleader for the
wrestling team). At age seven
Kristin attended her uncle's graduation from Edinboro University and then and
there made the decision that someday she would be among the many graduates who
use wheelchairs or have other physical disabilities. Years later she graduated from Edinboro with a degree
in speech communication, and then got her master's degree in educational
leadership from Gannon. Currently Kristin
works for UCP as a supports coordinator for the attendant care program and as a
housing counselor, helping many people with disabilities live independent lives
in the community. As Ms. Wheelchair Pennsylvania, Kristin will spend the next
year speaking to numerous groups and working to combat the ignorance and
stereotypes that still work against people with disabilities. As an advocate, her message to peers
will be not to be complacent and accept discrimination, but to actively work to
change things. In her words, "One person CAN make a difference."
