braincakeBraincake.org Wins Leading Edge Award

This is the first time the Leading Edge Award has been given
to an online experience. The award recognizes extraordinary
accomplishments that not only enhance the performance of an
institution but also significantly advance the mission of science-
technology centers and museums. It is a great affirmation of Girls Math and Science Partnership's work on gender equity.

BrainCake.org has seen tremendous growth over the past two
years - the site receives more than 1 million hits each month,
and online resources - like the gender equity research,
podcasts, and even the lipgloss recipe - were downloaded
more than 100,000 times in the past 18 months.

The Girls, Math & Science Partnership's mission is to engage, educate, and embrace girls as architects of change. Working with girls age 11 - 17 and their parents, teachers, and mentors, GMSP draws organizations, stakeholders, and communities together in an effort to ensure that girls succeed in math and science. GMSP is a program of Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh, PA.

NHYMCC Empowering Girls through Fairy Tales
The Coro Center for Civic Leadership is proud to be celebrating their 10th Anniversary here in Pittsburgh.  Started in 1999, the nonprofit organization was brought to Pittsburgh and began working towards the mission of building ethical and effective leadership, with a focus on community involvement.  As a national organization, Coro Pittsburgh works in unison with centers in New York City, St. Louis, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.

Coro Pittsburgh offers several opportunities to become involved.  Girls Coalition members are encouraged to learn more about the Women in Leadership Program, to apply and to nominate women who are currently displaying leadership qualities in their communities for the April 2010 course.  Fall 2010 courses
include Leaders in Learning and Running for Public Office.

Additional opportunities include the ability to work with our Fellows Program in Public Affairs participants.  Coro Pittsburgh is now accepting applications for businesses to submit project work for the young professionals to complete concrete projects at a low rate.

To learn more about Coro Pittsburgh and opportunities to be involved, contact Misti McKeehen at mmckeehen@coropittsburgh.org or 412.258.2676.

jataraAmazing Girl Jatara McGee

When it came time to plan her Sweet 16 party, Shadyside Academy junior Jatara McGee decided to do something different--something to benefit others. She celebrated her November 2nd birthday by having dinner with friends, but the real celebration was November 21, 2009, at the charity walk she coordinated called "Her 16th Wish." The walk benefited Children's Hospital and Girls Coalition member, Strong Women, Strong Girls. For more about this Amazing Girl, read the full article in the Pittsburgh Tribune Review.
