| Girls Coalition of Southwestern Pennsylvania Newsletter
|
Greetings!
It has been an exciting month for the Girls Coalition of Southwestern Pennsylvania! The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette featured the Girls Coalition on June 2, 2008. If you didn't catch it, be sure to check it out. Our membership grew to 32 organizations strong, and we welcomed our first individual member. Our newsletter now reaches more than 500 individuals and girl-serving agencies. We would like to issue a correction from the May newsletter. One of our members, Women Against Abusive Relationships (WAAR), was incorrectly identified. We apologize for the error. We are looking forward to many more exciting and successful months to come. Stay tuned for information on our next networking event and our upcoming Girls Summit in the fall, but first, read on and get connected! |

Profiles
Amazing Girl Kayla
Kayla has been a member of Adagio Health's Real
Aids Prevention Project (RAPP) and Teen Advisory Council (TAC) for over 5
years and has emerged as a true leader among her peers. In addition to
attending weekly meetings, RAPP members participate in community outreach
programs that educate their peers on healthy lifestyles and responsible
decision-making. Kayla has consistently gone above and beyond all that has
been asked of her. Kayla's positive attitude and willingness to take on
challenging responsibilities has made her a valuable asset to our program.
Kayla's maturity is demonstrated by her dependability, punctuality and
strong commitment to the program. In addition, Kayla is a very articulate
young woman with the ability to communicate effectively with both her peers
and older adults.
I had the pleasure of working with Kayla on an important
project a couple years back. Adagio Health collaborated with Advocates for
Youth, a non-profit organization based in Washington D.C. In this project,
Kayla met with state representatives to advocate for comprehensive sexuality
education in Pennsylvania. Kayla represented our agency very well, and her
efforts were instrumental in the success of the project. Also she received a
scholarship to represent Pennsylvania in the "My Voice Counts"
conference held in Washington D.C.
Kayla is an outstanding young woman, and I strongly support
her in any endeavor she chooses. In a world where we hear so many negative
things about our young people, it is refreshing to work with a young woman
who is willing to go against the grain and be a role model in her community. Recently Kayla finished up her first year at Carlow
University; she is looking to becoming a nurse.
Kayla was nominated by Aaron Thomas, Youth Projects Coordinator, Community Health at Adagio Health.
We would also like to recognize Michelle and Victoria for their "amazing efforts" as part of Busted! Teens Against Tobacco Use. Michelle and Victoria were nominated by Tobacco Free Allegheny.

Call for Amazing Girl Nominations
The Girls Coalition of SWPA
is accepting nominations for "Amazing Girls" to be featured in our newsletter. We have established broad criteria to consider when submitting an "Amazing Girl." We are interested in showcasing girls who
demonstrate the following characteristics: leadership; commitment and willingness to work hard; perseverance; the
drive to excel despite challenge; and creativity. The purpose of this feature is to hear about
girls that may be "truly amazing" but have not yet been recognized. Please share your recommendations, and we can all see how she shines!

Member Profile: Auberle
Auberle, founded in 1952, is
dedicated to caring for and healing abused, neglected and troubled children
throughout Southwestern Pennsylvania. The
agency serves thousands of children and their families every year through our
residential care, foster care, emergency shelter, in-home intervention,
education and community programs. More information is available on their website.
According to Chief Program Officer
Diane Stanoszek, though many of Auberle's programs are co-ed, the reality has
been that residential services have mostly served boys. Speaking from twenty
years of experience in the field, Stanoszek commented on the trend that in the
last few years girls seem to be getting into more serious kinds of trouble, and
needing more intensive help that is tailored to their unique needs (rather than
just using existing program models designed for boys).
In response to the changing needs
of the community, Auberle has recently made a commitment to focus on its
services for girls. "We don't want girls to come in second (in terms of program
quality and attention)," Stanoszek explained. As part of their plan, Auberle
has hired a new Director of Female Services, Jennifer Ely, who will be
responsible for networking, learning about gender-specific programming,
establishing partnerships with other girl-serving agencies, and redesigning
agency services for girls. Ideally, they will be developing a comprehensive
continuum of care for troubled girls - including mental health and substance
abuse services, counseling, residential programming and school-based services. Right
now Auberle is an Allegheny County pilot site for testing SNAP (an evidence-based
program from Toronto
targeting youngsters age 6-11 that are at risk for police involvement). Currently
the model is being tested on young boys, but Auberle expects to expand it to
girls in the next year or two.
Auberle was
the second agency to become a formal member of the Girls Coalition of
Southwestern PA, and looks forward to sharing ideas and partnering to enhance
their programs for girls. Contact Diane Stanoszek for
more information (dianes@auberle.org or
412-673-5800). |
