Our Mission
Triad Health Project provides emotional and practical support to individuals living with HIV/AIDS, to their loved ones, and to those at risk for HIV/AIDS; implements strategies to educate those at risk and the community about HIV/AIDS; and advocates locally, regionally, and nationally for individuals and groups infected with or affected by HIV/AIDS.
Our Vision
We will stand together for as long as it takes until HIV/AIDS is no more, working together to promote enlightenment, dignity, acceptance, understanding, and love, demonstrating that we are not only enduring this epidemic, but prevailing over it.
Did you know that 37% of THP's funding comes from individuals just like you? Now more than ever, your gifts play a tremendous part in helping THP fulfill its mission. When you contribute to THP in any amount, you stand with us in the fight, and you stand up for everyone we serve.
Thank You!

Inside THP Monthly Musings from THP's Executive Director
Last week Shana Carignan, THP Development Associate, and I were invited to attend the weekly meeting of managers of Leon's Beauty Salons. Parker Washburn, owner of Leon's and an honorary chair of this year's Winter Walk, asked us to sit in with her team to discuss ideas about how the Leon's family can support the walk this year.
I was touched to learn that a few of Parker's managers go all the way back to the early days of THP and served on our original care teams for clients. And I was so impressed by the genuine commitment of all the managers to this year's walk and the work of THP.
All seven Leon's locations will be raising funds for this year's walk and Leon's employees will be participating in the walk wearing special t-shirts representing the Leon family.
In those scary early days of HIV/AIDS, Leon's lost several employees to the disease. It is hard for Parker to talk about those days and those losses. It is very, very personal to her.
At the end of our meeting, she shared the story of one of those people - a young man who came out to his parents as not only having full blown AIDS but also revealed that he was gay.
His parents rejected him and dropped him off at a motel in the middle of the night. He had a fever of 104.
At 3:00 AM he called his Leon's family and they took him to the hospital and cared for him until he died.
When Shana and I got back in my car to leave after the meeting, I turned to her and nodded back at the Leon's building and said, "That is why we have the best jobs in the whole world."
We get to see the very best of our community's humanity, compassion, and generosity. You can see it, too, on Sunday, December 4th.
Thank you for walking with us in all manner of ways.
With gratitude,
Addison Ore
Executive Director

What is Winter Walk?
The 20th Annual Winter Walk for AIDS is a three-mile walk that raises vital funding for Triad Health Project's direct client services and prevention education programs. The theme of this year's event is "I Walk...", and it serves as a powerful reminder that HIV/AIDS affects everyone. Each of us has a personal reason for standing up to HIV/AIDS, and this is the year to share our stories.
Why is this year's Winter Walk so important?
Triad Health Project is remembering several big milestones in the HIV/AIDS epidemic this year.
* 30 years ago, the U.S. classified its first case of AIDS. It is estimated that more than one million people are living with HIV/AIDS in the U.S., and that more than half a million people in the U.S. have died after developing AIDS.
* 25 years ago, Triad Health Project opened its doors as a nonprofit organization committed to supporting individuals infected with HIV/AIDS, to their loved ones, and to those at risk for HIV/AIDS. In 2010 alone, we served 2,749 people through a combination of direct client services, HIV testing, and HIV prevention education programs.
* 20 years ago, Triad Health Project held the first Winter Walk for AIDS, a modest candlelight walk that started at Grimsley High School, where friends walked for friends in their community who were dying from the deadly emerging disease.
How Do I Participate?

Client Story of the Month
| |
THP's Development Intern, Katie Seringer from Elon University, explores the range of emotions and difficulties our clients experience at Higher Ground and how a new client is transitioning into the group.
Many people who come to Higher Ground regularly have been HIV positive for at least 5 years. It is always interesting when a newly diagnosed person living with HIV comes into the Higher Ground community. For a newly diagnosed person, the worries and troubles about living with HIV are endless. A few among the many worries are: Do I tell my family, what medications do I take and will I be able to do the same things as before?
One new client has risen above the worries and meshed right into the community. He often expresses his deep gratitude for a community in which he can come and truly be himself. As he begins his medication regimen, he explains that Higher Ground is vital to his compliance because they offer a support he does not get elsewhere. We are all just people looking for a sense of belonging and community. Even though I am not HIV positive, I am happy to have this place as a part of my community, too.
