FETA Newsletter Spring 2009 |
|
|
|
Greetings! |
This edition of the newsletter marks our one-year anniversary of on-line access. You may have noticed changes from one edition to the next. These changes are indicative of the growth process. Becoming better than when we began requires us to continue growing and changing. Working on-line over the past year has given us the experience and confidence to move forward in our plan to convert the Renewal Application process so that it is available on-line. Changing the way things have been done in the past often requires extra effort and patience to make the intended outcome a reality. In this instance, converting mailing addresses into email addresses is tedious extra effort. The attention to detail required for success makes it a painstaking task but well worth the intended outcome of money saved and less work over the long term. Just as the newsletter continues to evolve, our additional on-line communications with you will improve. For the first time, on April 8, 2009 your FETA Membership Renewal Application will be sent to you by way of this email address. We ask for your patience and willingness to grow with us as we make this important change. |

From The President |
Spring is springing up all over and with it more great days to enjoy the trails. There have been lots of trails improvements over the winter. Many thanks to our crack Trails crews for keeping the FETA System in such beautiful shape over the winter. We know this is a tough year for everyone. The good news is that despite major expense increases, primarily for insurance, the FETA Board has "held the line" on dues this year. This has been possible by the hard work of the Member Communications Team, headed by Faith Jorgenson. Their efforts have saved FETA thousands of dollars in printing and postage. The response to switching to e-mail delivery of our newsletter has been overwhelmingly positive, so we will send the membership forms via e-mail this year. We think this will go smoothly, but please "pardon our dust" if you have any problems. Our intrepid new Membership Chair, Roberta Axelrod, will do her best to get you signed up efficiently. See Roberta's article below for more information. Your dues go primarily to trails. In addition to the many new trails, we have replaced several old bridges and made other expensive improvements last year. Most importantly, FETA has worked hard to be a good steward of the land and repair substantial erosion damage that has accumulated over the decades and reworked the land to move the water properly. We have been at this for years and the results are really starting to show. It is very important for us to respect our generous landowners' property and good footing really improves your riding enjoyment and the safety of horse and rider. If you have any suggestions for areas that need work, please contact Dave Smith, Trailmaster. We know everyone is always busy, so if you can't make the Spring Cleaning Trails Day on March 28th, try to do your part to help tidy the trails as you ride. Our riding landowners maintain their own trails and if you are a neighbor to one of these generous people, offer to help out. That is the tradition of this community trail system. As is taking personal "ownership" of the condition and use of the trails. If you would like to volunteer to help in any capacity, please contact Rhonda King, who coordinates putting us all to work. Finally, we can only send information to people who are on our member database. Some area residents and landowners do not realize they can join FETA and may inadvertently impose on our Landowners' generosity. If you know anyone who is 'accidentally' riding on FETA trails or is new to the area and might be interested in joining not only to ride, but to help support this unique, historic trail system, please pass the word. We all need to do our part to preserve this priceless legacy. Ride Friendly. Ride Safely. Dot Moyer

Hello From Your Newly Appointed Membership Chair |
It is great to be involved with this wonderful and unique trail system that is FETA! Coming from Florida, my husband Mike and I did a lot of trail riding but nothing can compare to the miles of amazing FETA trails! Our home is along Peniel Road where we host The Moffitt Trail. It is a shady trail about a mile long. Please use our parking lot along Hayes and Peniel Roads and come visit us. From our parking lot you can ride through Stoneybrook to Pretty Bottom, FENCE and beyond. Our dream is to expand this trail to the east into Thickety Ridge. My volunteer job at FETA is a very busy one. I am preparing your 2009 renewal application which will come to you soon by way of this email. Your patience is deeply appreciated while I get my feet wet trying to follow in Randi Wetzel's footsteps! She has done an incredible job these past four years which helped make my transition smoother. Thank you Randi! You will receive your renewal packet as an email attachment. After downloading the forms, please take your time to carefully read and fill in all the blanks and sign both the Rules Form and the Release/Waiver Form. You may want to schedule a vet appointment now to insure you have current negative Coggins for the horses you ride on the trails. Please renew early to avoid the late fee penalty which takes effect after July 1st. Cavalier and I look forward to seeing you on the trails! Roberta Axelrod Membership Chair

Spring Cleaning Trail Day |
The flowers are a'bloomin', the birds are a'chirpin', and there are far too many apostrophes in this sentence. Calling all volunteers -- it's that time of year again... FETA Spring Cleaning Trail Day!
Some of the work we've done on past Spring Cleaning Trail Days include the establishment of McIntyre's Crossing, Thickety Ridge Way, and new trails on Little Mountain as well as the re-routing of Still Hill, work on River's Edge, and numerous other projects. This year, we will focus on the trails of Rondo Ridge. Rondo boasts a beautiful section of the trail system that is a mystery to many of our members.
If you haven't had the pleasure of joining your fellow FETA members for an invigorating Saturday morning romp in the woods, you're in for a treat! Jobs are available for all levels of fitness and abilities; everything from clipping branches and briars to dragging trees off the trail. Whatever level of participation you are ready for, we've got a job for you! We will meet at FENCE on Saturday morning, March 28 at 9am. It's okay to arrive a little early. Our caravan will leave for the trail shortly after 9am and park near Rondo Ridge.
Please bring clippers, nippers, long-handled loppers, rakes, etc. Bring anything that will help make the trails "ride-ready". We'll have water for everyone. Feel free to bring a light snack for mid-morning. We should finish around noontime.
If you have any questions, call Dan Hecht at 828.894.2383.
See you in the woods! |
4th Annual Welcome Picnic |
Join us at FENCE on Thursday, June 11 at 6pm for our Welcome Picnic.
The trail maps will be on display. Our trail crew will be there to answer your questions. We are planning a brief "New Member Orientation" with a few surprises. The orientation is open to all FETA Members who wish to attend.
Our picnic is potluck. Please bring a dish to share.
Last names beginning A-J please bring a dessert.
Last names beginning K-R please bring an entrée (meat dish).
Last names beginning S-Z please bring a salad or side dish.
FETA will provide soft drinks and bottled water. You may bring a stronger drink for yourself if you prefer.

Smile, You're On Candid Camera |
Well, not really. You're actually on FETA Cam. Our apologies to the late Allen Funt!
In an effort to make the trails safe for you and to ensure their proper usage, we have placed a camera in various locations throughout the FETA system. ATV users have been trespassing and we are attempting to identify the culprits before the coming spring brings them out in force.
The camera is nondiscriminatory. Photographs are taken of anything that passes, from skunks to horses to ATVs. We are pleased to report we haven't seen riders without helmets, ponying, or anyone out when the trails are closed. Please continue to report infractions you observe and know that the trails are being monitored.
So remember, SMILE when you ride!
David Smith

Reminders For The Trail |
With the promise of spring and a new season of trail riding, we have a few reminders to help keep you safe on the trail:
- Place your FETA tag on the left side of your saddle so that your tag number is visible to oncoming riders.
- Check your helmet for proper fit and condition. After all, it does keep an important part of you safe - YOUR Brain.
- Carry a cell phone programmed with ICE (In Case of Emergency). List your emergency contact information under the designation of ICE. Include the person to contact and all phone numbers. You may choose to set up an additional ICE designation in your cell phone for your horse with emergency veterinary contact info.
Happy trails to you all,
Rhonda King
