From the President
Fall is when we traditionally take time to recognize and thank our landowners for their hospitality in sharing their trails with FETA members. We do that formally with our Annual BBQ which will be held October 11th at FENCE. This is always a wonderful time to meet and enjoy the company of our generous landowners, fellow riders, and drivers. In order for us to have the right amount of food, please let us know you are coming. Please RSVP by October 5th to judithkerns@alltel.net. We look forward to seeing you there.
Remember that a friendly wave is appreciated by our landowners, trail volunteers, and crew any time of the year. No one likes to be ignored! And, while it is uncommon for a rider to be downright rude or abusive, it does happen and jeopardizes everyone's riding privileges. More common, however, is the disrespect shown by violating the rules which protect landowners' property. So, as we get out to enjoy the beautiful fall season, lets remember to thank the landowners every day we ride by honoring our commitment to comply with their rules.
I would also like to thank the FETA members running for election to the Board of Directors. Managing a trail association of over 120 miles and probably 400 riders is a big job and everyone on the Board makes a contribution. We are your representatives, so please feel free to contact any of us with any concerns or suggestions that you might have. And, of course, FETA could never exist without the hard work and contributions of our members. From trail maintenance to coordinating with the DOT for signs, to contributing materials and services, to arranging great educational programs, our members really step up and carry the ball.
Finally, we need to thank our emergency medical personnel for the great job that they do when we need help. Take a minute to thank any St. Luke's ER or Polk County EMS and Rescue Squad professional you can find. Every year FETA presents them with a small token of our appreciation. Please see the article on how you can help with that.
Best wishes to everyone for a safe and happy holiday season.
Ride friendly, ride safely.

 Guided Trail Rides
I accepted the invitation to "meet new friends" at our FETA picnic in June. The following week I hosted two rides on the trails around our farm and rode at Harmon Den in the Pisgah National Forest. I did life on the trail with four new friends and may have ridden more in that week than I have since moving to the area in 2005. I have been keeping up the pace ever since. Sharing our interest in horses and trail riding is enriching. Telling stories about adventures we've had on horseback, describing folks we've ridden with and lessons we've learned along the way, creates a bond among riders. It can also be a character-building experience. A conscientious guide watches and waits for the herd, making sure all is well behind. The follower trusts the guide to know the way. If you find yourself in a wilderness area and the guide says, "I may not know where I am, but I'm not lost," you will become a more alert follower. Upon nearing the end of the ride, it's a good indication you've had a true riding adventure should the guide proclaim, "I didn't know whether you and your horse are experienced in mountain riding, but I know one thing: you will be at the end of this ride." Check out the new section entitled Guided Rides. I hope you take the time to introduce the trails you ride to someone who is unfamiliar with them. If you're invited on a ride, I hope you accept the invitation. I had a memorable week and look forward to more time on the trails with my new friends.

GOAL: Protect FENCE's Open Space
Last year FENCE's Board of Directors approved a Conservation Easement to the Pacolet Area Conservancy to ensure that FENCE's land will remain permanently protected from development. FETA's Board responded to the challenge. To help raise the Stewardship funds needed, well known artists Phyllis Eiffert and Sarah Holmberg were commissioned to create a print of the FETA Trails Area. The prints have been sold to raise the money pledged by FETA. These lovely limited edition, signed prints have been enthusiastically purchased by many members of FETA and the community, raising almost $5,000 toward FETA's pledge to date. Prints are still available, and make wonderful gifts, 'closing presents' for realtors and, of course, a wonderful addition to your home or office. Be a part of protecting the FENCE legacy. A limited number of prints are still available. If you would like to help FETA meet its goal to help permanently protect FENCE's open space, please contact Sarah Holmberg at 828-894-3780.
HEADS UP! TIMMMM....BER!!! Yes, the trees are crashing out there. Dead and dying trees are coming down at an increased rate. Be sure to look down the trail for dangerous leaners and call them in. Sometimes they give no warning, however, so be careful especially after rain (remember rain?) or on windy days. You ride at your own risk and the landowners and FETA cannot get all the trees down so watch your heads! Also, deer hunting season begins on September 8th. Many of our landowners permit hunting and, of course, many trespassers hunt without permission. Wear bright colors and avoid dawn and dusk, and be sure to use caution.
LITTLE MOUNTAIN TRAILS UPDATE A number of our members have asked about the status of the Little Mountain property and the County landfill. Hat Creek Cattle & Timber Company, LLC purchased the Champion Paper property several years ago, and has added to the acreage with additional purchases. They have developed part of the property as Hughes Creek Preserve, an upscale equestrian development, with easement protected FETA trails. They have no current plans to develop the remaining property, approximately 400 acres, which also has many miles of beautiful trails. FETA entered into an agreement with Hat Creek to be the sole user of the trails. This means that people cannot use the riding trails unless they are FETA members, and that other uses are not authorized by the owner. In exchange, FETA restored the trails and will maintain same. A clean up day is scheduled on November 8th to work on the smaller trails.
FETA will be trying to establish some 'order' on the property, but you should be aware that there is a long history of trespassing and illegal hunting there. If you see other users on the property, particularly ATV's, please report it to Don Lyons at 828-894-2975 or foxchapelfarm@yahoo.com. Many thanks to FETA Board members Bill Ennis and Mike Stone, Hat Creek's partners, for allowing exclusive trail use to FETA's members. Let's be sure to be very good stewards. Come join the Clean Up day crew to make the area even better.
HELP SHOW OUR THANKS! Have you or a loved one needed the help of EMS, Rescue Squad or the St. Luke's ER this past year? They are here for us year round, and each year FETA volunteers make a basket of cookies and other goodies to give to them while they are working over the holidays. It would be fun if everyone they helped were to contribute to the baskets, and maybe send a personal note or card. Interested? Call Dot Moyer at 828-606-6571 or dotmoyer@alltel.net |
